Microsoft Edge taking over as default PDF viewer

No matter what method I try. Edge continues to take back over as the default PDF viewer on another one of the laptops I have here. The best I have gotten is 2 days before it takes over.

I do not want to use Edge for anything especially a PDF viewer. I am trying to use Adobe DC as the PDF viewer.

What can I do to completely and permanently remove Edge.

I have changed the registry for file association.

Changed default app by file type

Removed all edge files to find they just reappear

Changed file name on Edge exe file

Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe

Tried different versions of Adobe

Tried Foxit reader and had the same issue

This was a brand new laptop a few months ago and the problem showed up about 2 months back on 3 computers here. But for this laptop Edge just wont let go.

Specs:

Windows 10 Home 64bit

MSI CX72 17.3in Core i7 Windows 10 Notebook [6QD-062AU]

Hi Callum,

There's no reason to try to delete or uninstall Edge. You can use Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google Chrome.

To select your default browser:

1.  Click the Start button.

2.  Select Settings and then click on System.

3.  On the left side menu, select Default apps.

4.  Select Set defaults by app.

5.  Select your default browser.

Let us know how it goes.

Either you did not read the question or maybe I didnt explain myself enough. Im thinking the former.

I use Google Chrome as the browser. Thats not an issue.

Edge is taking over Adobe and making itself the default PDF viewer. Im trying to stop Edge from doing this and no methods work as a permanent solution.

Hardly surprising.

I don't use Adobe (happy Sumatra PDF user for ages here), but try this: Run DC as admin (right-click shortcut or EXE, select run as admin) and then from inside it see if there's an option to set it as your default PDF viewer/editor. Once you've clicked that option and okayed your way out close the app and then try opening a PDF directly. Hopefully DC should handle it and the setting should stick (till at least the next Win update which deliberately messes with user defaults in order to push MS' own crap apps).

Your last note certainly hits the nail on the head. Unfortunately I have already tried setting this from Adobe. It will occasionally ask. This method has lasted as short as a few mins.

The strangest thing is.. With 2 new computers here since I posted this. One being my own new laptop. I am not having the same issues. This is one laptop only. But the user of it opens PDF's all day like to audit drawings. So its possibly the worst person for this to effect.

If the problem doesn't happen on your other PC's then it goes to the quality of the install which is everything.  There's a reason why almost no tech enthusiasts will run a Factory or Upgrade install.

Go over the Windows 10 Performance and Install Integrity Checklist - Microsoft Community

to check the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance and repaired as needed.

Ok thanks I will go over that. To clarify though it has happened on other machines here but they were easily fixed. and have not had a recurring issue with Edge.
