Live tiles not updating in Windows 10

I can’t believe how buggy Windows 10 is. First, Cortana stops working. Then the weather tile. Now the news tile. It’s like a disease that spreads and every day it just gets worse.

FYI I have tried the usual Powershell commands in other threads (no joy; in fact, this destroys tiles and necessitates a system restore).

For the last three days the weather tile has been stuck on the daytime temperature. Last night I was able to get it to update but it’s now stuck on that. If I click through, the weather eventually shows up in the app but it takes minutes to load.

And for the last two days, the news tile has shown a photo of McDonald’s. No words, just a photo of McDonald’s. Clicking on the tile launches the app, but again it’s blank for minutes before anything shows.

God only knows if the Money tile is right as those numbers seem awfully familiar. Pretty sure the Dow Jones index changes daily, but not in Microsoftland.

I’m actually tired of the stock answers as I have read plenty over days, and none of them get to the core of the problem.

What is wrong with these new features, Microsoft? You have had months to get them right before this service pack, which appears to have solved nothing.

Please don’t tell me I’m offline as Cortana does, as I’m clearly online if I am posting this!

Also the feedback link in the app does not work … this is all it does. Even if I click on my Microsoft account, all I ever get is this window.

Hi Jack,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Please answer a few questions to narrow down the issue and provide you with better assistance.

  1. Is the issue specific to Weather app?
  2. Did you make any significant hardware or software changes to the computer prior to this issue?

You might be referring to Live tiles that get refreshed in a few seconds to show a new picture or information. I would suggest turn the live tiles on and off and check if the issue persists:

  • Right click on the app tile on the start menu.
  • Click Turn Live Tile off.
  • Press f5 to refresh the desktop.
  • Right click on the app tile again on the start menu.
  • Click Turn Live Tile on.

Let us know if this helps or post back if you need further assistance, we are here to assist you.

Hi Akheel:

Thank you for your reply. It’s not specific to weather; it’s affecting news as well, which is completely frozen and shows a photo of a McDonald’s branch. It’s shown this for two days. I have made no changes to the computer at all, which is why the ever-changing errors of Windows 10 are such a surprise.

I have done as you suggested but now the news tile shows just the icon, and no image or headline.

The weather app has changed without intervention, although it was frozen for most of the day. However, it does not show the current temperature. Again, if I turn it off and on as you advised, it just becomes an icon:

I believe this, the ever-increasing errors of Cortana, and the lack of notifications are all related.

Clicking through shows nothing now, e.g.:

Akheel, I have been away using my Vista laptop, and it was nice having an OS that was actually stable.

I did exactly as you suggested for my Windows 10 desktop machine. Some days it works, some days it doesn’t.

I had tried the Powershell command long before I came to this point. It is incredibly damaging on Windows 10 and should not be recommended. It necessitated a system restore after I tried it in November.

Hi

I had a problem with a tile not showing live info, I clicked on it and when it opened it appeared that I had to update some info - I guess the app had been updated and just needed a "sign in". Not sure if this will help anyone...

After Windows Update automatically installed August 23, 2016 — KB3176936 and KB3176934 (OS Build 14393.82) (Windows 10 version 1607) my Weather app live tile stopped updating.

I could click the app and it would open fine with the current weather data, but the large Weather live tile would not update. After turning off the live tile then back on, I would only get the default app icon image, no data at all (even though opening the app shows changes to data from the last check) even after PC reboots!

I performed a System Restore to before KB3176936 and KB3176934 and the live tile came back as normal. This is repeatable.

I have since disabled Windows Update service completely due to multiple issues with this service making automatic changes causing multiple problems:

-display adapter driver automatically updates to one that causes it to malfunction (screen tearing issues, vsync settings not sticking in driver, 60Hz frame rate locks in certain apps with vsync disabled, and more)

-Weather app, Store, and other Live Tiles not updating

Not acceptable.
