Release Notes for Skype 8.62

The latest Skype version 8.62 is out. There are cool new features in this release like seeing even more friends and family in the grid view during a Skype video call. You asked, we delivered! 

Skype for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Web 

  • Choose your backdrop: You can now choose one of our predefined backgrounds for video calls, in addition to uploading your own. Learn how to customize your background on Skype. 
  • The more the merrier: You can now see more of your friends than ever in a video call; up to ten in the new grid view. Learn more about views in Skype video calls. 
  • Bug fixes and stability improvements. We've improved message sync when some conversations weren't updating, as well as made a few general improvements.

The new features are rolling out gradually over the next couple of days so if you don’t see them right away, just check again soon!

Apart from the new "cool features" there are several "cool" new bugs.

 

The "Launch Skype in the background" option is broken. No matter what the settings are, Skype always starts with visible window.

 

The control bar at the bottom of the call screen is now black and stays permanently on the screen. In all the previous versions this control bar was transparent and disappeared if the mouse was no longer moving. The behaviour is, however still correct in the Skype for Web version, even though the version number is 8.62.0.83 too.

 

The behaviour of the Call Layout option is random. On some calls the option to switch between Window and Float mode is available, on other calls, the only available option is "Switch to full screen".

And let's not forget the old (~5 months) bug that's debilitating in its very nature and continues to be completely unacknowledged by MS itself:  you're Skyping merrily along when suddenly a contact falsely appears as "Last seen days ago."

In that scenario, the contact will no longer see any subsequent messages that you send but will be able to send messages fine and therefore have no idea anything is wrong. You then contact that person another way to alert them to the problem and provide them with a temporary fix: login to web.skype.com and then restart Skype.

I have a similar problem. Sometimes my contacts show as active 24/7. Then I stop getting messages until we both reinstall and then the problem comes back. Its happened over and over again and I can’t keep asking her to reinstall.

Its been doing it again for two weeks now and I hate it.

That is similar. I wonder if the workaround that I mentioned would do instead? I'm not sure what reinstalling Skype is even doing other than laying down the very same files that you already had. It's curious that helps, because it shouldn't be any different than quitting Skype and restarting it.

Reinstalling seems to be the only thing that works but the other person doesn’t realise there’s a problem.

I’m hoping the update will help but I want a permanent fix. I never had this problem until early March and it’s happened once a month since. Very frustrating.

The pop-out call window does not resize also when on full screen mode either on an app/game or when watching a video, if you try to touch the pop-out window it disappears and it doesn't come back when you minimize the call screen.

Notifications do not work on Huawei and Honor android phones with the Skype app :(

Please add compatibility for Huawei Mobile Services to use Huawei push messaging.

why? you talk about apps.. and up grades.. when they don't work  , fix, problem. Skype/Microsoft desktop. not working..  a Java script error---- can not hear sound of other person.. etc.  Microsoft program files.. ( Incompatible) PKG.3.0----- why? you have new browser..  but not fix this.. tell Microsoft about this  for their Skype..  Fix this..upset now... no one is saying any thing.. have tried every thing... well not working.. thank you... why? talk about Mac..  iPad etc..really.
