How to SMS from outlook 2013

Hey all,

So the company I work for use Microsoft exchange.  We would like to be able to SMS from outlook 2013.  I have read that they fased out the SMS feature as there were not many people using it.

Is there a way to SMS from outlook 2013 like a add-in that I have to install?

Your help would be appreciated.

:) Jamie

Hello Jamie,

The Outlook Mobile Service (SMS) support is been removed from Outlook 2013. There are third party add-ins available online which claim to do so.

Note: Microsoft does not recommend or support using third party Add-ins/Plugins. User may use them at their own will.

You may also refer to the following thread which discusses the same and check if it helps:

In case if that doesn’t help, do get back to us and we would be glad to assist you.

Thank you

Thank you for the thread but unfortunately it is just people saying how they would like the feature back.

Are there any Microsoft ad-ins that would be available to create the ability to SMS from outlook 2013?

Hi Jamie,

Thank you for replying.

As of now there are no Microsoft Add-ins available to send SMS from Outlook 2013.

Very disappointing that Microsoft does not support SMS text messaging in Outlook 2013. I wish I knew this before I upgraded to Office 2013. Thank God, we only upgraded a couple PCs. We will stick with Office 2010 and NOT upgraded any more devices or PCs. I hope future releases of Outlook do in fact support SMS text messaging - after all the whole world is going mobile. Is that not a good enough reason to support it? Thank you.

Interesting. MS created a rather poor SMS function in OL 2010. So of course few people used it. Now they have pulled it from 2013, and people are complaining. MS, next time try creating a better service instead of just giving up. SMS is an integral part of people's lives. Its not like we're asking from something esoteric.

Well put John Loiaconna IV! Exactly. The SMS function in Outlook 2010 was weak, but better than nothing. I still use it. In fact, I downgraded 2 of my PCs from MS Office 2013 to 2010 just for this reason. I just don't get why MS punted on SMS in Office 2013 when the whole world is going mobile. I would have expected a much more robust SMS feature set in Outlook 2013. Interesting that you can receive SMS in Outlook 2013, but you cannot send!!!! UGH! Common Microsoft - you are better than that!!! ;-) Still love you though. Just got the new Surface 3 - It's awesome! :-)

I have been using the new BlackBerry Blend software to access my SMS messages.  If you have a newer BlackBerry it is a good way to respond to text messages while you are sitting at your computer.  Since you will also receive email, it is a bit redundant, but it has not bothered me.

Hi,

This seems to be a strange feature.

I'm running Exchange 2010 with Office 2010.  I've configured my mobile to be able to send messages via Outlook 2010 all works fine can send receive and sync messages too and fro.

I upgraded the PC to 2013 and the feature wasn't there initially.  However, when I received a text message I could see the message and I could also respond to the message from within 2013.  Also the option for to send a text message appeared on the New Items button.

Low usage is Microsoft's code words for "excuse to make us pay for something". I am sure there have been some very profitable conversations between MS and third party SMS software companies.
