msg files will not display in windows explorer preview pane using Outlook 2013

I receive the following error when trying to view an .msg file in Windows Explorer preview pane when using Outlook 2013

ERROR: "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request.  Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client."

I've confirmed that Outlook 2013 is the default mail client both through the Windows 8 Control Panel and via the Windows Registry.  I can double click on the .msg file and it will open using Outlook 2013, but the file will not display in the windows explorer preview pane when selecting it.  I uninstalled Office 2013 and installed Office 2010 and confirmed that I am able to view the .msg file in the preview pane with Outlook 2010.  When uninstalling Office 2010 and installing Office 2013 the issue of not being able to view .msg files in the windows explorer preview pane returned.  Has anyone else experience this issue?

Hi Mike,

Thank you for posting the question in Microsoft Community.

I will help you open the .msg file in Outlook 2013.

This issue may occur if the Outlook registry key is corrupted. When other programs try to use the Outlook Simple MAPI interface, they cannot retrieve the required information from the registry.

Follow these steps and check if it helps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
  3. In Registry Editor, locate the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail\Microsoft Outlook.
  4. Select the subkey, and then press DELETE.
  5. Click Yes.
  6. Quit Registry Editor.
  7. Start Outlook.
  8. For Office 2013,Right-click in the screen’s bottom-left corner and choose the Control Panel from the pop-up menu,  choose Uninstall a Program from the Programs category, select Microsoft Office 2013 and then click the Change button. Next, click Repair, and then click Continue.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the repair.

Hope the suggestions are helpful. If you need further assistance, reply and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank you.

Hello Aravinda,

Thank you for the suggestion.  I followed your instructions, but unfortunately it did not resolve the issue.  I found this article where someone was having the same problem back in November 2012.

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/officeitpro/thread/d4370b39-db9c-4e36-a9be-4330a079c285/

Their solution was to run the 32bit version of Office 2013 instead of running the 64bit version of Office 2013.  Unfortunately, my supervisor has instructed me to use the 64bit version of Office 2013, so I'm hoping there is a work-around to this issue.  Any other suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Hello,

The suggestion above didn't work for us. At the moment we aren't able to change from x64 back to x86 Office 2013, because an other 3D-CAD Software use 64bit Office Addon (Access database).

Is there some different solution?

regards, Reisenhofer Andreas

These steps did not resolve this issue for us either.  Windows 8 64x, office 2013 64x.  We are getting the same error as the others when opening or previewing .msg files.  The msg file does open but it is cumbersome having to hit ok on this error every time.

I have the same problem. Is there a solution by now other than downgrading to the 32-bit-version?

ISSUE

=====

When messages from Outlook 2013 64 bit are moved to a network drive or the local machine and the Preview pane in Windows explorer is used, error message “This file can’t be previewed because of an error in the Windows e-mail previewer.”

RESOLUTION

==========

·         Users on Outlook 2013 were reporting above mentioned issue.

·         We confirmed that this is “by design” behavior in Outlook 2013

·         Outlook 2013 64 bit does not have a previewer for MSG files. We did have one in 2010, but this was deprecated. Windows has a MAPI previewer for 32-bit, which does not work with 64-bit Outlook 2013.

·         You mentioned that there are very few users in the organization who use this feature as the mails can be managed without moving to a network drive as the O365 accounts have a mailbox size of 25 GB and the information about the deprecated feature will be passed on to the few users who use it.

·         You agreed to close the case for now and reach out to me for any questions on the same.
