Please tell me the Group/Sharepoint listing is coming back to Office apps - backoffice tab

After installing fast ring 1710 b8613.1000 when I go to File|Open, then select Sharepoint for our work Office 365 site, I just get a list of recently used folders. I much MUCH MUCH preferred the list of all of the Groups/Teams and Sharepoint sites I have access to. The MRU list for files in RECENT is fine, but folders in Sharepoint is useless to me. With folders, you can never create a new file and save directly to the group. You always have to save locally, then move the file, then reopen it.

Of course, a lot of our users forget the 2nd part so they just leave it on their desktop. :-( Hoping the group feature rolls out wide so they can create a new file and save to a Team in one step.

I posted this in Excel because that is what I use most, but applies to Word and PowerPoint as well.

Hi Ed,

I'm not quite sure whether this is a change with the latest Fast ring version on this so let me know that so I can see about getting someone to get you some answers.

In SharePoint, if you work with a finite set of folders, I've found syncing the folder with your desktop will help take that "2nd part" out of the loop. When the user saves to the local folder, it's mirrored to the SharePoint site. After a machine crash and losing all my local files, I switched to that on my working folders. Now at least if the OS crashes again, I just have to resync to get them back.

Btw, this week is the Ignite conference, so getting someone on the product team might be a bit slow.

Hi Jay,

  1. Yes. This is with the latest Fast Ring.
  2. Some in our org work with a finite set of folders, but others do not. For example, yesterday I needed to put a file in an Operations team I rarely go to. Probably every 6-8 weeks.
    1. Process with Groups in the SHarepoint connection
      1. Scroll to OPerations Group
      2. Navigate to desired folder in Operations Group
      3. Save file
    2. Process with recent folders in the Sharepoint connection
      1. Save file to local machine.
      2. Close file
      3. OPen Teams
      4. Navigate to Operations Group
      5. Navigate to folder
      6. Upload file
      7. Open file
      8. Delete file from local machine

We don't have a lot of sync'd folders to be honest, and when we do, it is either:

  • a mobile device where local folders are needed sans connectivity
  • A folder contains file types that must be local to work - like Access database or any 3rd party app that doesn't understand Sharepoint
  • A favorite/common sharepoint location

So we rely heavily on direct-to-sharepoint connections. With Groups in the "Sharepoint" connection part of File|Save, that direct connection was there. Now it is gone in latest Fast Ring.

By the way, recent folders are always available via Recent|Folders, so having folders in the Sharepoint connector is a bit redundant.

Thanks Ed,

I sent a note to an Excel product manager. I'm hoping he'll have some info (and pop in here with it). If not, I hope he points us in the right direction.

Thanks for the details!

Jay - I just saw this blog post. That indicates the Sharepoint location should be Sharepoint sites and Group Team sites, not just folders. And that is with 1709 on the slow ring. I have another machine with that build and it is still showing just folders.

edit: Came originally from this post under the section "Quickly access your sites and groups."

Maybe this is being rolled out? But doesn't explain why Fast Ring lost it. Or am I reading it wrong?

"Sites – [Your Company Name]

SharePoint or Office 365 Groups document libraries"

That doesn't seem to indicate an MRU of folders. If that is waht it is saying, it is misleading. Above that it says "You can save as a copy, or to a different location in Office 2016. Select the cloud, web site, or device location where you want to save the file." - nothing indicates there it can only be a folder you have opened before (MRU)

Thanks Ed,

This is good info. I haven't heard back from the PM, but this week is pretty sparse around Microsoft as a lot of folks are at Ignite.

Thanks for the info, I'll make sure we pass that along and figure this out.

Hi Ed,

Thanks for your patience. The team turned the feature off for builds 1813 through 8618 as there was an issue. Word from our PM, it should be resolved on updates beyond 8618.

Let me know if that helps
