Xbox 360 Slim Red Dot of Death

My Xbox 360 (S)lim was working perfectly this morning.  I turned it off around 9am today, and when I turned it on around 12pm I got the Red Dot (NOT RING, it's a Slim) of Death.  Mind you I've done some researching today and before anyone jumps to conclusions, no, I do not have a removable hard drive to take out and put back in, it's the 4gb hard drive model.

Now, looking at my power cord brick, before I boot it, its orange.  Once I press the power button on the console, the brick light changes to green.  I tried several different outlets in my home, and the same thing happens at each outlet - red dot on console, green light on brick.  I think it's also relevant to mention that it's a solid red light, it's not blinking.

I've also made sure everything was unplugged from the console, and have been letting it sit in a well ventilated area for several hours now.

So now, unless I'm overlooking something, it looks like I'm stuck sending it in for repair.  Thankfully, yes it's still under warranty.  Does anyone have any other ideas on what it could be or possible solutions?

I would suggest phoning support for your region, explaining to them whats happened and then ordering a repair. Seems like the best solution to me.

Well after looking all over Youtube, and Googling the crap out of RDOD, nothing that doesn't void the warranty works.  So, since I still have the warranty, I will be sending it in for repair.  I did call 1-800-4MYXBOX and talked to a tech support and they said if I've already tried what's been posted on the Xbox/Microsoft site, and it still isn't working to put in for a repair order.  Apparently there's not much else I can do with out voiding the warranty and fixing it myself.  I'm only hoping that it doesn't take more than the usual 2-3 weeks.

Yeah I just had to send in my 360 slim in for an E-82 error. Its the Halo Reach console. I contacted support and they told me E-82 error is caused by an intermitten connection inside the xbox.

I just got mine back from sending it in with the red dot, 2 mins after having it turned on it does it again... They said to send it in again. I have owned my box for 4 months, they have had it in the repair shop for 1 month of that. Now it will be two, tell me how that is right?

Hello there Zyrxis,

I know other have tried to help you with this and you may have posted back in June of 2011, most do not know or may not at that time known of this, but the slim has a built in feature that when the red dots comes on, it detects your syste, is over heated and usually will not power back on until your system cools down.

If many hours had passed then yea I would say to call xbox support on that situation, I believe xbox had stated any other system that got RROD or the solid red light was guaranteed repair for up to a year or two, I know other probably could correct me on that if I were wrong.

My Xbox slim (250 GB) did it this morning on the dashboard so I think I will just leave it for a while and see what happens, btw I tried the solutions other websites provided like shaking the hard disk drive but it didn't work, I'm thinking it overheated though.

Looks like its becoming more common as this generation of Slims approaches 1 year... I've had mine 9 months and it just crapped out. It was already having problems with the disk drawer closing on it's own and not staying open... Then it constantly popped back open and wouldn't read a disk and the green light was constantly flashing. I could still get on Live but it can't play DVDs or game disks. So much for the fancy new hardware... complete CRAP!
