Wifi limited/no connection dropout in Windows 8

Hello, I am getting a Wifi connection dropout in Windows 8 -- either as Limited Connection, or a complete disassociation with my default SSID where my network adapter can see Wifi access points, but cannot connect.  In the Limited Connection state, I need to turn off the Wifi and then turn it back on.  In the second case, I need to run Network Diagnostic and have it restart my adapter.

I have this Wifi connection dropout problem happening on 3 laptops:
Acer V5
Thinkpad X1 Carbon
Asus UX31A

Acer V5 has the Atheros AR5BWB222 adapter
Thinkpad X1 Carbon and Asus UX31A both have the Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235 adapter

Drivers
--------------------
I have used the latest Acer network drivers.  There is actually a HUGE complaint/discussion going on for owners of the Acer S7 for this exact reason.  Although I use V5, both models share the same adapter (and the same problem).
The entire discussion can be found here:
http://community.acer.com/t5/Acer-Ultrabooks/Aspire-S7-391-Wifi-problems/td-p/7575

With my Thinkpad X1 Carbon I used the default drivers and I got Limited Wifi every once in a while.

With my Asys UX31A, using the default drivers, I also got Limited Wifi dropouts.  Then I decided to upgrade to Intel's latest driver and this (I think) produced a different result where I no longer got Limited Wifi, but instead I was unable to reconnect to my default SSID (Kimchi).  Supposedly because of WPA2-PSK encryption -- see below for debug info.  The connection dropout occurs within 24hours.  It seems the connection stability on the latest driver is not as good as the original as I used to be able to go on longer without dropouts.

For all 3 laptops, I keep them turned on 24/7 without shutting down or going into sleep mode.  That's how I can ascertain when the connection goes down.

My Network Router
--------------------------
I'm using an Asus RT-N16 running Tomato firmware.  It is not my router dying because other laptops can access the Web even when one laptop goes down.

Power Settings
-------------------------
In all 3 laptops I have the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" unchecked

Question
-------------------------
What is going on??  Obviously there are substantial device driver changes in Windows 8.  Are manufacturers having massive problems writing working drivers for Windows 8?  I totally understand this as I am also a developer....  but shouldn't Microsoft be working with the manufacturers on getting these drivers working 100%?

Or is this a problem in Windows 8 that we need to wait for SP1??

If you do a search you will obviously find a ton of people experiencing the exact same problem as me.  And granted, some of these people will say "updating drivers fixed it" but clearly, that is not the case for a lot of people.

What's interesting is that Intel is working with Microsoft to promote Windows 8 and yet their OWN drivers have problems too??  Are they even communicating at all?

So I guess it all boils down to one question -- what is Microsoft doing about this?  Has this issue been escalated?  because clearly there is a REAL problem somewhere... whether it is a manufacturer issue, or something wrong in the way Windows 8 is working with the drivers?

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device back on or plug it back into the power outlet. To restart a router or access point that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From the description, I understand that you have issues with Wi-Fi connectivity on 3 laptops.

We found that few of them got the latest updates from Acer Live Updater with which the connection issues seemed to be resolved. You may download the update 218 from Acer live updater and install it on the computer and check if this helps in resolving the issue.

You may download the Acer live updater from the following link.

http://acer--uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15458/~/acer-updater-does-not-find-updates

The issue seems to be with the driver software as the laptops you have mentioned have Windows 8 preinstalled. You might need to get in touch computer manufacturer for the drivers.

You may refer to the links for additional information.

Hope this helps. If the issue persists or any Windows related queries or issues, please get back to us. We are here to assist you.

Hello,

I will be playing around with updating to latest Acer drivers and will keep an eye out.

My UX31A dropped out again and was not able to reconnect.  As mentioned earlier, the UX31A is using the latest Intel Centrino 6235 driver.  I do not get Limited Connectivity.  It just is unable to connect to any WPA2-PSK SSIDs.  I had to reset the adapter again via the Network Diagnostic program.  The debug information after the network adapter reset is pretty much identical to the information I posted earlier on.

What can you gather from the diagnostic information below?

Hello,

Just a quick note: I have the same issue on my Samsung Series 9 laptop, using preinstalled Windows 8 Professional x64. I also read many other forums regarding this issue where many other users with many different type of laptops have this issue. From the looks of it this must be either a Windows 8 issue or a big coincidence. Is there any other suggestion/solution to this problem? As Samsung also "solves" it by saying to update the drivers which we all have.
PS: The PC and other Ultrabook running on Windows 7 has no dropout/Limited connectivity, just the Windows 8 machine(s).

I'm having the same issue with my new Lenovo twist with pre-installed Win 8. My Vista and Win 7 laptops that are connected to the same router/network have no issues. The problem happens when my laptop goes into hibernation. When I bring it out of hibernation that's when the "limited" wifi connectivity shows up. I have to disconnect and re-connect to get full internet working again.

I read a few posts where the default setting for running on battery automatically drops wifi to conserve battery power but I'm not running on battery. This is so frustrating!! I have all the latest Microsoft/Lenovo updates installed.

I just got the same with my Samsung Series 9 laptop with Windows 8 after turning it on from a long hibernation. I changed IPv4 settings of the adapter to use a fixed IP address/gateway/DNS server and it works again knock wood. Not ideal, but at least I can use it again.

I ended up restarting the router and it helped. It's as if my laptop messed the router up and the router refused to comunicate with it. My other laptop, Kindle, phone, Surface RT all connected fine, so I thought router was fine. But after all it had issues only with the laptop. Now it works, knock wood. And I am shutting it down instead of putting it to sleep. It's pretty quick anyway.

After I turned it on again it was back to the limited connection. So I am back to fixed IP instead of DHCP, I am not resetting my router each time the laptop messes it up, be it OS or the hardware.
