Moden Setup Host using 50% CPU on Windows 10

Hello,

I have recently experienced a high CPU usage of Modern Setup Host on my Windows 10. It seems most of the issues with this application are regarding upgrades from Windows 8, but I have already done this some months ago. The problem started somewhat a week ago, though. If I restart my computer, it is fine for certain amount of time, but afterwards it starts again. What could be the issue? :)

Best,

Boyan

Hi,

It is possibly downloading\installing the newer build 10586 "1511" November update...

I'm not real sure how to verify that though...

It is basically a complete reinstall... almost like going from 8 to 10..

This issue might occur due to any third party application conflict.

I suggest you to preform clean boot and check if it helps.

A clean boot is performed to start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program.

Refer to the below link:

Note: Steps mentioned for Windows 8/8.1, will work fine with Windows 10.

Hi Santosh,

Thank you for your answer. The only change I can think of is disabling some scheduled tasks, because I had the same problem with taskhostw.exe that I wrote some time ago but couldn't really get an answer for. I disabled the following tasks:

- SystemToolsDailyTest

- PCDoctorBackgroundMonitorTask

- PCDEventLauncherTask

- Optimize Start Menu Cache Files-S-1-5-21-425722031-1204749058-1324440041-1001

- Dell SupportAssistAgent AutoUpdate

Actually I am not sure if all of them were enabled before, but now they all are disabled :-)

My laptop is DELL XPS.

@slance310: That would be really interesting to get such a big update, as it is running already for a couple of days :)

So, maybe this would make things clearer...

Is Microsoft pushing a new Windows 10 release currently ?  By dates, not vague terms like "recently" or "soon" ?

Is Modern Setup Host a Microsoft application/utility/whatever ?

If so, what is it used for ?  What would cause it to spring to life and take over most of the CPU, network and disk ?

If not, do you know what it is, what it's used for, who's responsible for it, and any ill effects from stopping/removing it ?

If it *is* a Microsoft thing, are there any ill effects from stopping/removing it ?  What *are* the expected results from it ?

Is Modern Setup Host used for multiple things (other app updates, emergency patches, etc) or just for Windows updates ?

In other words, instead of the usual vague "how to troubleshoot a problem that's probably unrelated to the problem you're having" Microsoft advice, how about speaking *directly* to the problem ?

This problem happens to me too.
I guess this is caused by the most recent force update you put in Win 10 last week,

I always check what is going on in the task manager, and this Modern Host Setup is not normal

This only start happen these days, and i did not install anything new this period.

200+ people have this same problem

Here is how this problem start, I leave my notebook for lunch, it goes to idle mode as usual, when i come back , it triggers its antimalware checking (as usual), but after that, this Modern Host Setup start processing and it won't stop since then.

It used my 100% disk usage.

If it is a Windows update I wish Microsoft would make it more obvious that one is in progress rather than leaving people trying to find the cause Googling on a near unusable machine.

And same here. MSH has DiskUsage at a constant 99%, writing a huge amount of data per second, though not dl anything (since I've noticed it anyway).

My laptop has 8 GB RAM, I guess that's why I can still work, but it's a nuisance.

I wish someone had an official answer before I decide to kill the process (and risk having it restart its thing from scratch if it really is important)...
