Problem with name of Wi-Fi network

I understand that you want to change the priority of the Wireless network that you are using.

For better understanding of the issue, please provide us following information:

1. What is the make and model of the computer?
2. What is the Router/Device make and model you are hosting the wireless connection from?
3. Are you successfully connected to the internet using the same connection?

As you have only one network profile with the computer, changing priority will not help as it is helpful only if you have more than one connection available at the same time.

I suggest you to change the profile name of the wireless connection from the device you are hosting the connection and see if it helps.

Can you manage the Wireless Network that you connect to via the "Network flyout" or the "manage known networks" link?  Maybe I am misunderstanding your question, in which case I apologise in advance?

I wrote "one of them" so I do have multiple network profiles.

One of them is the one created by my wife's iPhone when it shares its Internet connection over Wi-Fi

It has a the name

Pingouin's iPhone

when displayed on the iPhone, but this translates into some weird string on Windows 8/10's interface.

This is probably why the 'set priority' nets command fails.

Of course maybe I can change the exposed name on the iPhone but that wouldn't fix the apparent bug on the Windows side!

I can probably manage that network (when the iPhone is on, that is) but what would thing bring me?

As I wrote in another response the whole issue seems linked to how Windows interprets the SSID exposed by the iPhone--something about the encoding of the apostrophe?

thats a known issue with iphone..

its not windows thats buggy but its only iphone's which have this problem..

Go ahead and use some windows phone or android ( just for testing purpose) and i dont think that you will face this probolem.

You probably should contact apple so that they can check if there is something that can be changed in there settings..

If Apple just uses UTF-8 (which seems the case) to encode the SSID then they are doing a perfectly legal thing according to the 802.11 specification (http://standards.ieee.org/getieee802/download/802.11-2012.pdf)

The fact I can connect to that network without any problem seems to indicate that Windows is able to handle that (presumably valid) SSID.

Only the command-line interface e.g. via netsh seems to have a problem with that.

I know that removing the apostrophe from the SSID would solve the issue, but still Microsoft should fix it.

Thats again the problem with iphone..

as i can use wifi tethering option from my windows phone and android and i dont face any problem while setting up priority while i use iphone it doesnt work.

Do you really think that windows will test each and every device to make it compatible with Windows..

Thats the job of device manufacturer not Microsoft.

if you still want to use it get in touch with apple and provide a feedback to them rather than blaming MS..

Until it is proven that Apple is doing something that violates the official 802.11 specification it's up to Microsoft to support the specification correctly.

Which is mostly the case given that connecting to that network works correctly.

Only the netsh command has some issues.

i am not sure why you are so desperate to blame MS.

while the same function works perfectly through android devices and windows phone regardless of what name i save for ssid ..
