When searching using the search functionality embedded in the start menu of Windows 10 (when clicking the Windows icon in the left bottom), a screen
is displayed saying "This is taking too long to load". On the bottom right, a string looking like a version number is displayed as well (see screenshot). This looks quite "off" and doesn't seem to come from Windows. Please help me.

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I understand you're having trouble with Windows search. Did you made any changes on your device? What is your windows version and edition? Press WIN+I then select System then About. Are you using the search for web search results? When is the last time its working?
Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe)
Press Start then Search for Command Prompt
Right click and Run as administrator
At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
Restore and repair system files
In the search box on the taskbar, type command prompt, then select Command Prompt from the list of results.
Right click and Run as administrator
Type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Restarting Windows Search
Use the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command.
Type the following command and click the OK button:
services.msc
Double-click the Windows Search service.
Click on the General tab.
Use the "Startup type" menu and select the Automatic (Delayed Start) option.
Click the Start button.
Click the Apply button.
Click the OK button.
Please check this article if it helps

Try to create a new local administrator account then check if everything is working there.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further concerns.

That would help if we could even run the CMD command.
I installed dropbox today, already uninstalled but this new 'search feature' is still here.

I had the same issue. I saw a post elsewhere suggesting that running windows update solved it:
https://superuser.com/questions/1545839/windows-10-search-prompting-this-is-taking-too-long-to-load
... but I had the opposite experience. I first noticed the issue after installing update KB4549951 a week ago -- and uninstalling it made the issue go away.

I've just installed the "optional" Windows 10 1909 update in the hope this issue would be resolved (only item showing in Windows Update) - it wasn't. However I do not have KB4549951 installed, so can't uninstall it!
The next earlier Windows update installed on my system is KB4552152 (and for Office, which I don't even use but was apparently automagically reinstalled at some point, KB4484126 and KB4484238). The three KB identifiers I named here were installed on 2020-04-17 but I don't believe this issue has been happening for quite that long - I think it's only been the last four or five days, during which time no updates have been installed.

It seems to be an Feature Update that causes the problem:
Feature Update to Windows 10, Version 1909
If you install the newest feature updates (you have to tell windows update to download those) it should be fixed, at least it was on my end. Good luck
