Microsoft Teams status is stuck on "Out of Office"

I recently went on vacation and accessed Teams from my tablet for the first time by installing the Teams app. Now I am back at work and using my work laptop. Even though I have signed out of the Teams app on my tablet and removed my work account from all Microsoft apps on my tablet, my Teams status is still stuck as "Out of Office." How can I change it to "Available?"

Things I have tried:

  1. (tablet) Changing status to "Available" on the tablet app
  2. (tablet) Signing out of the tablet app
  3. (tablet) Removing my work accounts from my tablet completely
  4. (laptop) Signing in and out of the Teams app
  5. (laptop) clicking on my profile pic and changing the status to "Available" or any other status. (There is no change at all)
  6. (laptop) typing in the command to change my status to available (no change at all)
  7. (browser) Accessing Teams through Chrome on my laptop and doing 5 and 6 (no effect)

Note that my Skype and Outlook status is correctly set to "Available." I'm at a complete loss and would really like help with this.

I have posted this same problem before.  There is nothing anyone can do to fix it except for MS.

Everyone here is simply showing the gap between turning off your out of office in Outlook (any version) and the lag that exist between Outlook and Teams.  MS would have to set up a sync exchange server with a better limit to comb changes and release them to Teams.

We can all bang our head against the wall, this is MS not you.  It will update when it updates, 1 hour to a few days later.

It may help some people but I was suffering the same issue even though I have no Out of Office appointments in Outlook and the period of automatic Out of Office replies had just finished. My solution was this:

1) Click on your avatar in the top bar to bring up menu with status.

2) Click on "Set Status Message" and in the new dialog set it to some text (doesn't matter what). Click Done.

3) Back in the menu move your mouse over the new status message and click on the trashcan that appears in the corner.

4) The new status message is removed and Out of Office status message does not return. The status icon should change too.

Update

This situation happened again and my method listed above did not help me this time. In the above it may have just been that Out of Office status was removed at the same time by the system that was co-incident with my actions.

This was posted 2 YEARS AGO and Microsoft still has not fixed it. This is why I tell anyone/everyone who see's their new commercials on TV for Teams to AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE.

This issue still happens daily to me... Fully updated Windows 10... Infuriating and NONE of the fixes work.

This is just one of MANY GLITCHES that have gone UNRESOLVED FOR YEARS IN TEAMS!

My status of "available, out of office" changed after these steps from an earlier post:

  • Go to File Explorer, and type in %appdata%\Microsoft\teams.
  • Once in the directory, you’ll see a few of the following folders:
  • From within ‘Application Cache’, go to Cache and delete any of the files in the Cache location.
  • %appdata%\Microsoft\teams\application cache\cache

I continued to the blob_storage instruction but then noticed that the status had changed to "available".

Hello!

I'm experiencing the same thing. I can't change my status although I've updated my out of office reply. :(

I deleted the Application Cache, as well as deleting and declining a week-long out of office calendar event from a colleague I'd previously accepted (had to dig it out of the trash to decline it). I also deliberately set myself as out of office for 15 minutes. None of those things cleared the status right away, but about 20 minutes after the deliberate out-of-office event, the status cleared up.. no idea which of those things caused the "out of office" status in MS Teams to go away, but one of them did, so I'm listing them all here :) Note that I did NOT get around to deleting the blob_storage, so don't think deleting that one is necessary.

Note I'm on a Mac, so instead of deleting the items in %appdata%\Microsoft\teams\application cache\cache, I deleted them from ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Application Cache/Cache/:

kgreenwell@srq3288:~$ cd /Users/kgreenwell/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams/Application\ Cache/Cache

kgreenwell@srq3288:~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Application Cache/Cache$ ls -l

Hi Krishen,

Thanks so much for including your steps for on a Mac! I worked through deleting the cache too. I quit teams then

I cleared this one:

~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Application Cache/Cache/

I also cleared:

~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Service Worker/CacheStorage

Once I also emptied the bin and reopened teams it was all good. Worth noting though that I have also deleted teams from my mobile so there was no app data being stored on there.

Good luck everyone!

So glad it helped and thank you for noting that additional step! Maybe we'll get to the bottom of this one! Have a great day :) Edit: Oh, just saw the bit about deleting Teams from your mobile-- I did not do that when I resolved my issue (Teams remained on my phone).

This is what finally worked for me to solve this issue this morning.  Nothing near as complicated as other posts/processes.  I went into my out of office auto reply in Outlook and set it to only display during a certain time frame today (even though I am in the office today) instead of all the time.  I did this at 8:20 am.  I set the auto reply/out of office message to expire/stop sending at 8:30 am today.  Problem solved.   Status immediately changed to only AVAILABLE at 8:30 am today.

With that said, I think it's ridiculous that Microsoft automatically uses the verbiage from your out of office message in Outlook to use in Teams.  I want a different message for my contacts in Teams.  Hopefully this will change soon.

This is the solution.  It worked immediately and is very simple.

That said, I wish my company wasn't forcing us to move from Skype for Business to Teams.  It's unbelievable that such a basic problem is still around after more than 2 years since it was first reported.  Whatever the underlying cause, this is terrible and cost me valuable time.  Fix it already!
