Hi,
I explain below the whole process to identify the issue and fix it. You can skip to the last step and apply the fix as I would assume it will be similar to your problem, if not then you may identify the root cause by following similar steps.
Ran Process Monitor, opened the App that was crashing and then searched inside Process Monitor for CompanionApp.exe. To search use the Find (binoculars) icon and press F3 to jump to the next entry. Look at the columns "Result" and "Detail" in process monitor. You can also look at the properties of each entry by right-clicking.
2. In my case by examining the entries I noticed that it had to do with the C:\Program Files\WindowsApps folder.
3. As the "WindowsApps" folder is a System hidden folder, you have to untick the box "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" under Folder Options.
4. So I right-clicked the WindowsApps folder inside C:\Program Files\ and selected Properties, clicked on Security Tab, clicked on Advanced Button and added the "Administrators" as Owner (don't forget to tick the box to apply to subfolders). Wait until it finishes applying the ownership. In the end you should be able to browse inside the folder. Open the App.
Note that it did not give the Administrators "Full Control" or "Modify" permissions by default but it was not necessary, when I opened the App it worked but in case it doesn't for you, maybe you have to do this.
Hope it helps.

Its August 19th 2016 and this problem is still occurring.
App crashes immediately upon opening. No external devices connected.
Really?
I must say. Windows 10 has been the buggiest OS release in quite a while. I don't remember having nearly so many buggy programs in windows 7 or 8.
