Will not let me take an avaliable Gamertag?

So i recently purchased some Microsoft Points and i went to change my Gamertag.I sent a friend request to the GT that i fancied, and it says it does not exist on xbox live. I also checked on this website but whenever I go to change my gamertag to the one I have chosen, it says that it is in use. But it isn't?

The gamertag i want is : R 8. And it says it is not on xbox live, but i can't have it either.

Why is this?

Other services such as Games for Windows Live and Zune also use the same system for Gamer Tags. So just because it is not being used on XBL, it is possible it is being used on one of the aforementioned services.

When trying to change your gamertag, the system will remove spaces from the tag to verify that there are no other similar tags. In your case, although we can see "R 8" is different than "R8" (which does exist with 0 gamerscore), XBox Live actually considers them to be the same.
