Yes, it has been tried. Duke Nukem Forever, for example, had nudity in both the PC versions and consoles. As I recall, not just the game but also it's nudity and immature tone on sexuality was heavily criticised.
And yes, I did mean to write that because it's true. It would still sell, of course, the distribution issues would come into play with retailers. Some retailers may not carry AO rated games, giving less access to customers to buy it.
Besides, it's a video game. Do you really need to see polygons for nudity?
