Old Hard Drive, New Slim Console

You can use a transfer cable to transfer everything over - support.xbox.com/.../set-up-transfer-cable   All you would need is the old hard drive and the new hard drive.

Just to say that Smwutches is 100% correct, I have done this myself and it's fairly straight forward to do.

Two things:

1-should you decide to try to remove the old hdd from its casing and try to install it into the new 360 you should know that the console would get permanently banned from XBL, costing you more money in the end to replace it for one that does connect. It is also against the XBL Terms of Service to try to use the old hdd in a new 360.

All you need to get to transfer everything over is the official MS transfer cable, retails for $19.99. Or you could use a USB Flash Drive (up to 16Gb) to transfer most of your stuff over and then re-download the rest from XBL. If you use the latter method the only thing you would need to transfer over are your game saves and any game specific special items (the kind you get with codes from the game manual/case). Everything else, your profile, licenses and download content all can be re-downloaded from the XBL servers. You would still need to perform a license transfer once you have moved everything over though.

Transfer cable seems the best option.

Dont understand why you get barred for using old hard rive. I wouldn't do it but I've already paid £80 extra to upgrade to the 120GB from 20GB so it seems a bit hatsh.

I wasn't asking for advice on self repair, just mentioned I'd opened half the case, that also seems a bit silly to not be able to generally mention that.

Anyway thanks for the replies, I'll keep my eye out for a cheap 250GB console, with the limited edition xbox out now or coming soon there should be some preowned ones coming into the shops.

Good to know I only need the hard drive and not the old console :)

A console can be banned at any time if it's shown to have been involved in activities against the Terms of Use. Because a used console doesn't show up as banned right after purchase does not mean it will not be banned in the future.

it works fine and is easy to do just like the other way (old hard drive new console) only you will get banned if your detected online. SOLUTION!! I have a slim, a data cable, a older 360 console and 2 320GB xbox 360 slim hard drives. The slim is in the living room hooked up to internet. the older console, in my sons room. I buy all my games off the dashboard (games on demand) movies too and then i disconnect the slim from the internet and bridge the data cable between the two and move all to the old console. Then i disconnect the data cable put the old xbox back in the kids room and hook mine back up to internet and re-download my games, movies, ect. Thus giving my son a cloned xbox using a new slim hard drive on a old console with no internet connection. Slapped a ROKU on top of it as well for netflix and all that other stuff so there is no need to hook it up to internet. Me 1 Microsoft 0
