Cannot Connect with A Friend

Hello,

I've been having problems connecting to a certain friend over Xbox Live for the past few weeks, ever since I moved. My networking equipment changed (obviously), so I have been fiddling around with settings on both the DSL modem and the router connected to the modem, but I have not been able to solve my problem yet. I am unable to connect to a party chat with my friend, nor connect to a game lobby with him, but when there is somebody else in the party or lobby, there seems to be no problem. My NAT has bounced between Moderate and Open (currently it is open), while my friend has had an Open NAT setting pretty much the whole time. It seems that there is something else preventing us from connecting to each other when we are the only ones trying to play or chat together.

My networking gear is as follows:

Modem: Comtrend 5071T

Router: Netgear WNDR3400

Currently I have the NAT filtering set to "Open" on the Netgear router (located in the WAN Settings category of the router configuration page), as I originally thought that maybe my connection was experiencing a "Double NAT", even though it had never been listed as a Strict NAT. I currently have DHCP enabled on the router, and I am getting a "local" IP address of 10.0.0.xxx, when the IP addresses distributed from the modem are in the 192.168.1.xxx range. I thought that if I disabled DHCP, maybe it would act as a simple wireless access point, with the modem assigning the "correct" IP addresses, and while I was able to receive a wireless signal from the router still, I was unable to connect to the internet, due to IP address issues and/or DNS issues (the 360's Test Connection function would give me different results just about every other time). After setting all of the hardware back to normal and re-establishing Internet connectivity, I thought that maybe somehow it was a problem on my friend's end.

Here's my friend's networking hardware info:

Modem: Westell 6100

Router: Belkin F6D4230-4 V3

I am unsure of the specifics of his network configuration, but I would assume that his setup is pretty standardized, since he normally doesn't have problems and doesn't have to mess with settings.

Something else of interest, I am connecting wirelessly to my router, while he is wired to his router, but I don't know if that would make a difference.

I have also tried connecting with my friend with other 360s within my home network (I have multiple, roommate has one as well), and we are unable to connect to any parties or lobbies with a friend, BUT we are able to participate in match-making with no problem, AND we seem to be able to join parties or lobbies with friends as long as other people are there too.

I'm about at my wit's end with this networking issue. I'm certainly no expert, but after years of LAN parties and configuring the routers/modems at my old home, I thought I would be able to fix this issue. It's been kind of a drag because usually my friend and I join up and play either Halo 4 or Mass Effect 3 match-making together, but we haven't been able to lately, because of the networking issue.

If anyone has any advice, or suggestions on how to differently configure my home network (I'm all but convinced the networking issue is on my "side" of Xbox Live, not my friend's), please do not hesitate to post! I can also see if my friend will post on this thread if additional info is needed from him.

Thanks!

Thank you for the quick response!

I am not at my Xbox at the moment, but I performed a Connection Test yesterday, and the test showed no errors, and reported no NAT issues. My friend is online right now, he has an Open NAT as well.

I checked out the link you provided, and it seems my modem (Comtrend 5071T) is not listed in the Networking Hardware list. I wonder if maybe I just need to get an updated modem from my ISP...

Also of interest, I realized that our Internet service is of the PPPoE variety, which everything has been set up correctly on the modem. But I was curious, do I need to transfer all of the PPPoE settings to the router as well? I thought maybe that would be interfering with the connection issue as well.

Thanks for all the help!

Hi there Butch,

First of all, thanks so much for taking the time to share your issue on the forums in such great detail!  You mentioned here that you were seeing this issue when connecting to one particular friend correct?  If you try to join a party with anyone else are you seeing the same issues?  It sounds as if the problem may actually be on your friend's end of things here.

Despite the lack of NAT warning on your friend's end they may want to try the steps in the NAT Troubleshooter here.  We would also recommend going over the steps in there for good measure just to be sure that nothing was missed on your end as well.  Though from what we're seeing here it looks like you may have already done so.

For that matter, since you also mentioned that this problem came up with your new network equipment it seems very likely that this may end up being the culprit.  In your situation we might try powering down the modem, router, and all connected devices completely for five minutes.  And when turning them back on, start by powering on the modem compltely, then the router, and finally the Xbox. 360 console.

Hopefully this info helps. Please keep us updated as we'd definitely like to see this get resolved for you!

I am able to join party chats and lobbies with other friends, so I will ask my friend to go through the NAT Troubleshooter when he is able to (Happy Easter!), but in the meantime, I am still curious: do I need to transfer the PPPoE settings of my modem to the router? Currently the router is only configured for DHCP and somehow I think maybe that is the reason I'm having this problem...

Thanks again for all the help!

Okay. I talked with my friend, he said he is going to mess around with his network settings within the next few days, when he has time. I found out that he originally had his Xbox set to the DMZ. He also had two ports forwarded on his set-up and had uPnP enabled. But he had since changed the IP address of his Xbox, without disabling the DMZ. While speaking to him today, he disabled the DMZ, leaving the network settings on the Xbox the same. He left uPnP enabled, and the ports forwarded that he had (80 and 3074, I believe), but we were unable to test our connectivity, due to time constraints.

I'm still caught on the PPPoE issue however. If anyone can advise on whether this would make a difference, I'm thinking about configuring the router to handle the PPPoE settings, rather than having it configured for DHCP. My internet connection is PPPoE, so does the router need to be configured the same way?

Thanks for the help!

Hmm, OK, please keep us updated with how it goes on his end. Yeah, let's try the change in configurating on your router.  I'm also moving this thread into the connection Forums over here: forums.xbox.com/.../9.aspx to get more help!

Great news! Although I have been quite busy lately, I was able to attempt a party chat with my friend who I've been unable to connect to, and to our surprise, the chat worked!!! He had uPnP enabled, as did I, but after entering the PPPoE information that was already on the modem into the router, it's seems to have fixed our connection problem! We haven't played a game together yet to ensure the issue is resolved, but I think that if the chat works, then joining games should be no problem! If there is a snag with playing games, I suppose it's back to square one...

I'm not sure if this is addressed anywhere in the Support section of the Xbox website, but perhaps this should be considered added onto a stickied forum post regarding Network Troubleshooting.
