How to export emails from window live mail to gmail?

I downloaded Windows Live Mail and set up both my Hotmail account and my Gmail account. I have copied/moved emails within Windows Live Mail from my Hotmail account to my Gmail account. I also configured my Gmail account to the POP mail settings.
When I log into my Gmail account, the messages I copied from Hotmail are not there. Why?

Please provide instructions on how I can export emails from my Hotmail account to my Gmail account successfully? I have a large amount of emails to copy and I do not wish to do it manually, one by one. There must be an easier way ...

I am not closing my Hotmail account, simply copying messages over to my Gmail account. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Holly Vossel

If all you're trying to do is move/copy your messages from your Hotmail account to your Gmail account, you can use TrueSwitch. The instructions for Gmail are on this page: Import email and contacts from another email provider.

You can also do it using Windows Live Mail, but then you would have to configure your Gmail account to use IMAP (the default in WLMail). POP3 only downloads messages from your Gmail inbox; it can't push anything back to Gmail.

I appreciate the instructions, but there is not an Accounts and Import tab, in my Gmail's Settings to click the Import mail and contacts.

Any other way that I can move/copy messages from my Hotmail account to my Gmail account?

Oops! It looks as if this Gmail function is slightly volatile, and it apparently stopped working a couple of weeks ago. On this page, I read that The "import" capability is currently unavailable, and we're working to bring it back soon.

Set up your Gmail to use IMAP instead of POP3. You will then be able to copy messages from your Hotmail folders to the Gmail ones, and they will then be synchronized with those in Gmail on the web.

Add another account in WLMail using imap.

Right click on the pop3 Gmail account name in the folder pane, Properties, uncheck Include this account when receiving mail and synchronizing.

Later, you can remove the pop3 account.

appreciate the reply and info. what i think is so bad is that, yet again, Microsoft are forcing customers to do something that is of benefit to itself, but not to necessarily to customers, certainly not to all of them, but not checking to ensure that what they want done really works. there is no way that people should have to keep coming to various sites/helpers to get info to make something work. if Microsoft were to do their side of things properly and completely, any changes would just work! i have tried to do both the update to Outlook (it was a nightmare), the downgrade back to hotmail (a bigger nightmare, had to image my machine back to get it working!) and the update to Skype (biggest nightmare of all!!) i am no idiot either. i worked in IT for over 10 years, so do have a bit of an idea of how to use a computer! Microsoft will lose me as a customer now after years of hotmail use, not that i suppose for 1 minute they give a toss about that!

Are you having trouble transferring messages from Hotmail to Gmail? Trueswitch appears to be working now, although it wasn't ten months ago when this thread was current.
