How do I set up an auto response in Windows Live Mail.

All of the replies I have seen on this subject seem to be Windows Mail or Hotmail. I am using WINDOWS LIVE MAIL and I can't seem to get an answer for this. I am trying to set a vacation response, can't figure it out. I am wondering if I should be using another e-mail system.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks much

Bill

This is for Outlook Express, but it is the same with WLMail. You need to use message rules.

If you do this, you will have to leave your computer on 24/7, be connected to the Internet, and have your e-mail program open. If you want do this anyway, the link below will explain how to do it. One thing I would suggest is that where it says to create a rule and check For All Messages, you change it and make the rule for people in your address book only. Otherwise you will be replying to Spam as well and could end up in an endless loop of bounces.

Most ISPs/Mail Servers offer this service which would be a better choice.

See Bruce Hagen's reply, and let me add the following: what e-mail program you use is up to and the choice should be based on how you work and what features rae important to you. Personally I think that Windows Live Mail is one of the poorest choices available, but that doesn't mean it's no good for you.

Some people will tell you to use Windows Live Mail; others will tell you to use Thunderbird; still others may have other recommendations. My advice is to ignore all such recommendations. I personally use Microsoft Outlook for e-mail and Forté Agent for newsgroups, but you should try several and choose what *you* like best, rather than make your decision based on what I, or anyone else, likes best (or even what Microsoft suggests).

I've followed the instructions and an auto reply was sent to EVERY existing email in the inbox. Messages that were read and forgot about 3 years ago were replied to. Why did that happen?

I am not sure how it happened. Did you click on Apply Now after you created the rule? Just a guess, but all I can think of.
