Unfortunately, it is not possible to make Windows 8 look like Windows 7.

There are ways to get the Start button back and not use the Start Screen.

StartisBack: http://startisback.com/
ClassicShell: http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/
Start8: http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

As for the full Aero Glass look, it hasn't been possible yet. It's been done, but it makes the system unstable.

Nope. Not at all. Not sure if Microsoft will allow us to do that in the future either. It looks to be gone forever without the use of the third party tools.

I grew up with the command line (on a Commodore 64, no less!), and I love Windows 8.

Windows has always been about a base operating system and 3rd party programs. If you didn't like the freebies in Windows, you simply downloaded and installed a 3rd party program that did what you want.

Downloading and installing a 3rd party Start Menu is no different, easy to do and you get a choice. You also get a better core than Windows 7 had.

Windows 8 is all good, and you tell me about any other Windows operating system where you can 'dual boot' with just one operating system installed.. :-)
