Hi, Buckalewej,

Unplug any peripheral devices - printer, microphone, etc...

Reboot and begin tapping F8 key

Select Safe Mode with Networking

Download the following tool and run a full scan to rule out malware

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16

While in Safe Mode with Networking

Go to computer manufacturer's site and look for updates

Open Device Manager

In main menu Click on View > Show Hidden Devices

Do you see any yellow exclamation or question marks?

If so, post back code errors associated with the device

Check disk for errors

Open a command prompt (CMD.exe) using Run As Administrator

Type chkdsk /F /R

Press Enter

You will receive a message regarding volume needs to be locked and would you like to start scan on reboot.  Press Y and Press Enter

Reboot Computer for scan to begin

Scan log can be found when Windows reloads in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application Log.

Look for Winninit

Run System file checker to verify the integrity of Windows Files

Again open a command prompt window using Run As Administrator

Type sfc /scannow

Press Enter

Note:  There is a space between sfc and /scannow

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

Are you using VMWare?

http://techblog.ginktage.com/2011/09/blue-screen-of-death-error-in-windows-8/

Try using this utility to identify the driver causing the issue

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

Usually there's a number associated with the error - Example:  STOP 0x0000001E

This will help with troubleshooting.  Post back the #

Troubleshooting:

  1. Try to replace the driver that is identified in the STOP error message, either with a known good copy from your installation media, or with an updated version from the manufacturer.
  2. Disable the driver that is identified in the STOP error message or any newly installed drivers.
  3. Verify that any new hardware or software is properly installed. Disconnect the new hardware or replace it to see if this resolves the issue.
  4. If you have a video driver that was not supplied with the operating system, try switching to the standard VGA driver or a driver that is compatible with the operating system.
  5. View the following Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List Web site to verify that all your hardware and drivers are compatible with the operating system:
    http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx
    (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx)
  6. Run any system diagnostics that are supplied by your computer manufacturer, especially a RAM check. If this is a new installation of the hardware or software, contact the manufacturer for any requires updates for drivers or firmware.
  7. Disable all filter drivers, such as remote control software, antivirus programs, backup programs, and so on.

Hello, I have purchased a new machine with Windows 8 and I also receive this message.  Should I follow the same instructions?  Or, will there be an update to correct this error?  I am so frustrated by this that I am ready to return the machine, for which I paid nearly $1500!

It may help to look at the minidump files from the crashes with a debugger.

Can you zip up the minidump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and make available (provide link) via Windows Live SkyDrive or similar site?

The following link has information on using Windows Live SkyDrive:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65

If you have problems zipping the minidump files copy the minidump files to another location such as a folder on the Desktop

Also, you do not necessarily have to zip up the minidump files, you can upload them one at a time.
