Bluecsreen on booting. Error code: 0xc0000034 the boot configuration data file is missing some required information.

I was just doing some photoshop work, and my laptop suddenly restarted. When it came back on, a blue screen popped up with this:

recovery

your PC needs tone repaired

the boot configuration data file is missing some required information.

file: \BCD

Error code: 0xc0000034

youll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.

press esc for uefi firmware settings.

the simple solution would be to put a windows 8 disc in and fully reboot, but I've got a lot of work on there and I really don't want to lose it. Is there anyway of fixing this without losing work? Or at least get into it so I can save my work on an external hardrive?

any help would be appreciated, if it's important I've got an Asus K55a, and it didn't come with a windows 8 disc but I can easily borrow one off a friend.

thanks a lot in advance

[Original title: Windows 8 blue screen, you need to repair your pc ]

Hi Nathan,

The error message states that some of the boot configuration data is missing. The boot configuration data file holds all the required information for Windows to boot. If this file is corrupt or if some file is missing, Windows will fail to boot. In this case, we need to repair the Boot files or rebuild the boot files again.

You will need a Windows 8 installation disc to repair the boot files without affecting your personal files. If you don’t have a Windows 8 disc, I would suggest you to download the Windows 8 installation files from another computer through this link and choose to create an installation media when the upgrade assistant prompts.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media

After you have a Windows 8 installation disc, follow these steps:

  1. When your computer starts, wait for the manufacturer logo to check the option for boot menu, it will usually be F12.
  2. The boot menu key might differ with each manufacturer. If you are unable to find the boot menu key, you may refer the user manual.
  3. Restart the computer, when the manufacturer's logo is displayed, keep pressing the Boot menu option key to enter the boot menu and change the boot option to CD\DVD ROM.
  4. After you boot your computer using Windows DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.
  5. Select the correct time and Keyboard type.
  6. Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner
  7. Click on Troubleshooting, advanced option and then click Automatic repair.

If the Automatic repair didn’t fix the issue, then you will have to manually fix the boot files from the command prompt. Follow the same steps as explained above to access the Windows recovery environment.  Once you are in the ‘troubleshoot’ screen, follow these steps:

  1. Click on ‘Advanced options’ and then click on ‘Command prompt’.
  2. Now, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.

Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Try these steps and let us know the results.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi Nathan,

I apologize for the delay in responding. Did you try the Automatic repair? What were the results?

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to perform a system refresh. Refer to the section ‘Refresh your PC without affecting your files’ in this article:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc

Note: If you upgraded your PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and your PC has a Windows 8 recovery partition, resetting your PC will restore Windows 8. You’ll need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 after the reset has finished. All your personal files will be deleted and your settings will be reset. All applications that you've installed will be removed. Only the applications that came with your PC will be reinstalled.

Cheers,
Ben.
