Pop-up (OSD) volume control gets "stuck" on a particular value after changing audio devices until rebooting

When you adjust the volume with media keys a pop-up (OSD) volume control appears in the top left of your screen showing the new volume level. You can also click on it once it has appeared to quickly set the volume to a new level.

I have noticed that sometimes if you adjust your sound device settings this volume control can get stuck displaying a previous value - for the sake of example, let's say 50%. When you adjust the volume via the keyboard the system volume does change, but the OSD displays the new value briefly before flickering back to the previous value. If you were adjust the volume up from zero it would display 0%-50%---2%-50%---4%-50%---6%-50% etc. If you click on it in this stuck state it changes the stuck value but doesn't actually change the system volume level.

I can replicate the issue by unplugging my primary (and in-use) audio device then plugging it back in. I have four audio devices in my system:

  • SB X-Fi Go! (USB, primary device, the only one that gets daily use - using Creative's drivers rather than stock USB audio ones).
  • Rear-panel motherboard audio ("High Definition Audio Device", S/PDIF).
  • Front-panel motherboard audio ( "High Definition Audio Device", headphones).
  • HDMI (Radeon HD6770).

Rebooting the PC corrects the issue. The volume control in the charms bar is not affected.

Hi Benryves,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community forums.

From the issue description, I see that you have an issue with adjusting On-Screen Display volume.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. We are here to help and guide you in the right direction.

To resolve the issue with volume, I may need some more information:

1. Are you referring to the volume icon that appears in Notification Area?

2. Are you adjusting the volume through keyboard?

3. What is the make and model number of the keyboard?

Method 1:
Let's first run Audio Troubleshooter and check.

a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.

b) Type troubleshooter in the search box and then press enter.

c) Click hardware and sound and click on ‘Playing Audio’.

Method 2:
If the issue persists you may try to install the audio drivers in compatibility mode.

Step 1: Follow the steps provided below to uninstall the Audio drivers.

a) In the start menu type ‘device manager’, click on settings and then click on ‘device manger’

b) Expand ‘Sound Video and Game Controllers” and right-click on ‘High Definition Audio Device and select ‘uninstall’.

Method 2:
If the issue persists, I would suggest you to boot the computer to safe mode and check if the issue occurs or not. If the issue does not occur in Safe mode perform clean boot and check if it helps.

Step 1:
I would suggest you to refer the article and check if it helps.

Step 2:
If the issue do not occur in Safe Mode perform clean boot and check.

By setting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue.

The volume control I am referring to is the one that pops up in the top left corner of the screen when you adjust the volume via the keyboard - it's a new feature in Windows 8, as far as I'm aware:

I am adjusting the volume via the keyboard. It's a Dell SK-8135, though the same behaviour is present if I adjust the volume with my wireless keyboard (Sunwave RKM-520).

I have noticed that the issue only occurs if I disconnect the audio device when audio is currently playing through it; if I unplug it and reconnect it when it's not being used the issue does not occur. The software being used to play audio does not matter (Windows Media Player is a good example, though, as it displays a pop-up notice when the audio device is disconnected).

I have tried disabling and then uninstalling unused audio devices - the issue still occurs. As far as I can tell safe mode is affected in the same way too.

It's not a major concern, as unplugging audio devices when they're currently in use is presumably not a very common scenario but it can be a bit annoying to have to reboot to make the OSD volume control work again.

I am having the same issue with one of my playback devices.
I have the SB Live external USB with speakers and SPDIF connected. The internal laptop speakers are also present and selectable.  I only have Microsoft-supplied drivers installed for audio.

Only when the SPDIF-Out is set as the default playback device does the volume display bug exist.  I can switch to other devices and have it work correctly, but when switching back to SPIDF, the problem returns.  Normaly I have SPDIF as the default and never change it (boots to this pick) so the problem is immediate on use of the keyboard volume buttons after initial boot. (50% is the bug's lowest display limit in this case)

I hope this info helps in troubleshooting the issue.
