Thank you for your prompt response.

I read carefully the instructions in the method you referenced.

Updates KB2952664, KB3020369, and KB3172605 were already installed on my AMD64 Windows 7 SP1 system.

So I turned off Windows Update, restarted my computer and accessed the Windows Update Catalog website using IE 11.

I downloaded KB3185330 from the catalog to my desktop and installed it from there, per the recommended procedure.

There was no change in the behavior of my PC:

  • It installs the update;
  • it indicates a restart is required to complete the installation;
  • it configures the update to 30% completion;
  • the PC shuts down and restarts;
  • the "configuring Windaws Updates, do not turn off your computer screen completes the configuration to 96% and then hits a critical stop, reverts out of the update and restarts.
  • The installation failed.

I checked the event log and the error is still the same " error code 8004005".

Any other suggestions?

Please note that I run Norton 360 and IBM Trusteer.  Disabling them doesn't make a difference.

Are you sure you're trying to install the 64 bit versions of those updates and not the 32 bit versions by mistake?

That does not look like the correct one. It should be this .......

Thanks for pointing out the difference.  I had not understood the significance of "Embedded".  I retrieved the proper version and attempted to install it but again, the system reverted out of the changes prior to competing the configuration.  The problem appears to be elsewhere.

I checked the setup event log and and found the following:

"Package KB3185330 failed to be changed to the Installed state. Status: 0x80004005.

and from the Details tab:

"Status: 0x80004005."

.

Pls refer to .......

http://www.ghacks.net/2016/10/12/windows-error-codes-decrypted/

... and the included link to M$ website in the article.

Seems, the error code is related to "Access denied". It's likely that one of yr system settings has denied access to Windows Update to complete the install, eg firewall setting, router setting, antivirus setting, etc.

.......Or maybe, one of yr installed software is not compatible or uninstallable bc cumulative updates from M$ often uninstall incompatible 3rd-party software.

I had the same fail, both through Windows Update and via the download. I thought it had something to do with the AMD x64 processor but it turns out it was because I was multibooting (win7, xp, ubuntu mate). Once I bypassed grub everything ran fine.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Z

Tried disabling some of the 3rd party startup pgms that I thought the most likely offenders, to no avail, keep getting the same response.  The reported error code 80004oo5 is time stamped at 08:31:08:588

Rather than proceeding blindly, I wondered if anyone might help me interpret the the WindowsUpdate.log entries that immediately preceded this event:
