MS Word has hijacked my Desktop and all Icons have been changed to MS Word. Can't seem to get rid.

I am running Windows7 Home Premium. All the Icons on my desktop have changed to the Word Icon and every icon now fires up MS Word. I have not been able to change this Icon back to what they should be. MS Word has hijacked my desktop.

Any help gratefully received

I was able to fix the problem by restarting, F8 to open boot options, choose repair mode and system restore back to a few days prior.

The user of the pc said it started when they double clicked a file and was prompted to choose a program to open the file with...they chose Microsoft Word and this changed all of their icons to MS Word icons.

Hope this helps someone.

See what this article mentions about a Registry Key called "UserChoice ", see if you can adapt that information and apply it where relevant to fix your problem.

If this has only just begun to happen maybe you can use System restore to correct the problem.
