Error 0x800f0922, Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688)

My Windows 10 PC keeps trying to install this Flash Player security update (in a time-consuming, multiple-reboot process) and keeps failing with Error 0x800f0922. I've read that this error might have to do with the System Reserved Partition being too small, but enlarging mine to 500 MB didn't fix this. I wonder if this might be related to the fact that Flash doesn't work for me on Microsoft Edge? (That issue is discussed here.)

Can anyone help resolve this error? My computer also is failing to install KB3105213, though I don't see any error code reported on this.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

I suggest you to follow the Methods below and see if it helps:

Method 1:
I suggest you to run the Windows Update troubleshooter it will automatically fix some common problems installing updates and check if it helps to resolve the issue. Click the below link:

http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

Method 2:

If the issue still persists, try the below method and check if it helps or not:

I would recommend you to reset the windows update component manually. Resetting Windows Update Components will fix corrupt Windows Update Components and help you to install the Updates quickly. Follow the below steps:

1. Press Windows Key + X on the keyboard and then select “Command Prompt (Admin)” from the menu.

2. Stop the BITS, CryptographicMSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                           net stop wuauserv

                           net stop cryptSvc

                           net stop bits

                           net stop msiserver

3. Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

                          ren <C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old>

                          ren <C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old>

4. Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

                        net start wuauserv

                        net start cryptSvc

                        net start bits

                        net start msiserver

5. Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it and then restart the computer.

Nope, this didn't fix it. Same thing: still fails at 90%. Method 1 corrected a couple things, but when I run it repeatedly, it keeps on "fixing" the same problem: "Service registration is missing or corrupt." Also, you seem to have a mistake in Method 2: that '>' punctuation in the "ren" commands need to be removed for the command to work. And even after executing all of those instructions and trying to update again, I got the same issue.

So ... now what? Do I need to do a clean install to get past this? I updated from Windows 8.1 on this machine, and it seems like a lot of people who updated from Windows 7/8/8.1 are having similar issues with these recent Windows 10 updates.

I'm trying Method 1, but I don't see any "Troubleshooting" to select when I type "troubleshooting" in the search bar. (See the image below.) What am I doing wrong?

OK, I surrendered: I figured that it would likely be easier/faster to just factory reset my PC and install the update than it would be to continue down this annoying troubleshooting road. So, I did a factory reset and installed the latest updates without any problems. This was definitely the way to go: it's a lot less painless to reinstall a few apps than it would have been to keep banging my head against this wall.

But I really hope that future Windows 10 updates don't give these head-scratching error messages.
