How to stop windows 8.1 update from downloading windows 10 upgrade

Today, I got a new tablet running Windows 8.1 pro. I went to windows update in the control panel and download some update.

Here is  the cases but all attemp seems to be unable to stop the "Force" upgrade of windows 10 from happening.

I DO NOT want to install windows 10.

Case 1: Select the updates for windows 8.1 I need, deselect Windows 10 upgrade in the Optional updates. At the bottom of the Windows update window, I can see the NO optional update is select, thus, the Windows 10 upgrade should not be downloaded.

Result: The Win 10 upgrade is still being downloaded regardless of the fact that I didn't select it.

Case 2: Select the updates for windows 8.1 I need, deselect and hide Windows 10 upgrade in the Optional updates.

Result: Same as the previous attempt, Win 10 upgrade is still being downloaded regardless of the fact that I didn't select it.

Case 3: Select only ONE update for windows 8. Make sure NO optional update is selected. Since the Win 10 upgrade is in the Optional update, it shouldn't be downloaded. I went to Optional update, look at it 3 times and make sure it's not selected!!

Result: Same! Still downloaded.

Why? I said NO, I DO NOT Want to upgrade to Windows 10.

From now on, I am forced to NOT  RECEIVE ANY update for Windows 8.1 because any time I try to update, it will force me to upgrade to Windows 10.

Imagine I go to the car deal just to do an oil change and they force me to buy a new car instead! This is absurd!

Hi,

Try this it worked for me:

Bring up the charms on the Right of the screen, select 'Settings' then select 'PC settings'

then go to 'Update and recovery' look at the details of the updates and  you will see that the Win10

update is ticked but greyed out-'more details' will state it can only be installed via the desktop, which is the way you have been going for your updates.

Tick the updates you want to download/install and you will see the Win10 update is NOT included.

Only use the Control Panel route when you want to install Win10-if ever!

Good Luck!

Hi,

In windows 8.1 if you move the pointer to the top or bottom right of the screen it should open up a vertical row of charms, the bottom one being 'Settings' which is the one you want.

Can't help with the backup question.

So I cant ever use automatic updates again?  That's ridiculous.  Isnt there a way to remove the get windows 10 update and still use my update system normally? windows 8.1 is 4 times faster than 10 on my machine.

                                                         Thank you for your time.

Hi there,

Thanks for following up. We're happy to help you sort out this automatic update issue. To get rid of the upgrade notification, feel free to check out this post from Andre Da Costa, which can be found here. The step he provided should get rid of the notification to update your operating system to Windows 10.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards.
