How do I open an .ics file attachment sent to me via email if I don't have Microsoft outlook?

I received an attachement  via email, and it was labeled as a .ics file.  When I attempt to open it, I receive the following message:  "Adobe reader could not open 'preseason schedule.ics' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged.  I tried opening it with other programs, such as microsoft word and microsoft excel, without success.

Answer

#1 - There is no need to install "all of Microsoft Office" just to get Outlook - do a custom install and select the options you need/want HOWEVER

#2 - If all you want is to see the calendar info - no need to install anything, simply use Google calendar (free) as per the operative portion of Brian's response "You need a calendaring program that understands ICS files in order to open it and make sense of it"
