Primary email/SMTP defaults to *onmicrosoft.com in Office 365

We have an on-premise AD syncing with our Office 365 via DirSync. When we create a new user locally in AD the user gets created in Office 365 but with the incorrect primary/SMTP address. We then have to manually edit the proxyAddresses attribute by using the ADSI Editor for that user and force a manual resync.

How do ensure the correct domain (and not the *.onmicrosoft.com) is used when new users are created in Office 365?

We checked that our domain is properly configured and set as the default domain in Office 365.

Hi Erick,

Do you mean the proxyAddressess attribute is not configured when the user is created in AD? If yes, we suggest you always specify the proxyAddresses attribute to make sure the primary SMTP address will be synced to Office 365 correctly.

If you have already defined the attribute at the beginning, I want to collect a screenshot of the user attributes in AD to troubleshoot this issue. You can click Use rich formatting when replying and then click Insert/Edit Media to upload the pictures.

Thanks,
Henry Huang

henry,

thank you for the quick response.

no, the proxyaddresses attribute it not configured in ad during creation of new users. we simply right like to create a new user in ad. half of our users don't have an address specified address and their proxyaddresses attribute is blank yet they have the appropriate primary domain in office 365.

are you stating i would have to use the adsi editor each time after creating a user and set the proxyaddress attribute?

should this all happen automatically?

Please explain your environment in more detail. Are  you running Exchange onprem? is this a hybrid deployment? If you are not running any type of Exchange on-prem, then you would need to specify the correct primary smtp address on-prem first. After the user is synced it should get the correct primary smtp address in O365

Skip,

The only thin on premise is our Active Directory. Could you elaborate what you mean by "you would need to specify the correct primary smtp address on-prem first"? Are you referring to using the ADSI editor to set the proxyAddresses attribute?

Thanks.

Hi Erick,

Yes. The value of ProxyAddreses in on-premises is not set. Please configure the primary email address in the format of SMTP:*** Email address is removed for privacy *** and alias as smtp:*** Email address is removed for privacy ***. After the change in on-premises, run a force sync to check if it reflects in Exchange Online.

Best Regards,
Bruce

Bruce,

As described in my initial post, I am already aware of how to set the primary address manually.

How can I make it set by default? I cannot do this for each new user we create in our domain. It is inefficient.

Thank you.

Hi Erick,

In a DirSync enabled environment, the primary address is replicated from the on-premises proxyAddresses attribute. It’s irrelevant to the default domain in Office 365.

For future management, the email addresses are also managed via the proxyAddresses attribute in on-premises as well.

We focus on the Office 365 configuration. If you want to set the on-premises attributes with some default pattern, please post the requirement in the Directory Service forum for better assistance.

Best Regards,
Bruce
