Exchange Health Mailboxes syncing online?

i am running exchange 2013 on-premises and office 365 business premium in hybrid mode with dirsync activated. after a few days health mailboxes from my on-premises started to appear in 'active users'. i reconfigure ad connect to leave out 'exchange system objects' from ad but the mailboxes remained. i reconfigure ad connect to only import a single ou but the mailboxes remained. i even tried disabling dirsync, deleting the online users (and emptied recyclebin in powershell), then enabled dirsync and the mailboxes returned!!

am i missing something? are they a requirement for synchronisation?

Answer

Thanks for the quick reply Edward,

I seem to have found a solution. De-selecting the container in Service Manager or through 'AD Connect>Customise Synchronisation Settings' was having no effect for me,

The solution for me was:

  1. Delete the mailboxes on-premises using the EMS command: Get-Mailbox -Monitoring | Remove-Mailbox
  2. Manual sync using Azure PS: Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Initial and wait for online users to be deleted.
  3. Then restart service 'MSExchangeHM' (Health Manager)

The health manager then recreated the health mailboxes but they were not synced back to the cloud.

To answer your question, previous to this when syncing after removing 'Microsoft Exchange System Objects' the sync service only registered 'Updates' to AAD but not 'Deletes'.
