Windows 10 built in microphone not working.

I have recently installed the new Technical preview of windows 10 on my hp pavilion touchsmart 14-b109wm. I upgraded from Windows 8.1. I wanted to try out the Cortana thing, but it wasn't hearing me apparently. So after installing and uninstalling drivers and what not, I have found that the microphone just is not working. I tried to make a skype call, and I couldn't be heard on the other end as well. Nothing is getting picked up on this microphone. I went and downloaded drivers directly from HP and I have nothing. Apparently it is an IDT  HIgh definition Audio driver, it listed as default recording device. It is also listed as 'internal microphone array'. So, I'm kind of stumped here, after installing windows 10, no microphone, and trying the drivers and then installing an older set didn't work either. Anyone else have this issue? Any solutions? I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

Thank you for your interest in using Windows 10 Technical Preview.

This issue might be because of settings related to Microphone.

The issue cab be resolved by making Microphone as the default device and updating the sound card drivers.

Make sure that the Microphone is not disabled and is set as default.

Make sure that the microphone that you are using is not disabled and is set as default in the computer. Follow these steps to check this:

a) Right click on the volume icon and select “Recording devices”.

b) Now, right click on an empty space and select, “Show disconnected devices” and “Show disabled devices”.

c) Select “Microphone” and click on “Properties” and make sure that the microphone is enabled.

d) You may also check if the microphone that you are using is set as default.

You can also refer to the following link, which has troubleshooting related to “No Sound”.

No sound in Windows (Steps referred in the following link are applicable to Windows 10 Technical Preview as well).

Hope this helps. Please do let us know if you need further help.

Okay, so not sure if it you'll have luck with this, but Cortana couldn't hear me either. Well, not until I searched through several forums with various error messages I received, and stumbled upon this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104/en-us

It's a link from a MS support engineer, and I learned through the "Device configuration issues" that there was a registry file error with the Intel(R) display audio driver (I suspect there might be a similar issue with your drivers). It ended up being a fairly simple fix. Maybe this may help some of you, maybe it won't, but worth looking at to see if it helps.

Oh, after I removed the registry error, I had to restart my computer, a fact which was not mentioned in the instructions. If you do attempt this to solve your issues, remember to restart!

Okay, so last night I got it to work, there were a couple of things that were causing problems for me....

1. The HP provided drivers were just not good. I installed them several times and uninstalled several times and I could not get them to work properly. The microphone just wasn't picking up any sound though it was selected as default device. So I uninstalled the audio drivers provided by them in hopes of finding a newer driver directly from the manufacturer of the audio codec. But I couldn't find any so I just left it alone for the night and let windows install drivers. That seemed to work because I was showing someone how Cortana was supposed to work and I said "Hey, Cortana" and it popped up. But it was giving me "Something isn't right".

2. So because it did pick up my voice I figured the drivers were probably good now. But Cortana still wasn't working. I noticed a couple of apps were telling me "internet connection unavailable" so I disabled the firewall, but I noticed that my WIFI was set as "public". So I had a tough time trying to get it to change to "private". I had to do the "gpedit.msc" trick and it still wanted to be public, then when I was tinkering I decided to try to join a homegroup and it said something about changing the location, so I did that and now my apps all work and Cortana is working just fine.

So, TL;DR.... Uninstalled drivers that came from manufacturer, let windows find its own drivers, then I set the network to "private". All seems to be working now. Thank you for the replies, all.

I tried this both of these suggestions and was unsuccessful.  The first suggestion did not offer the front of computer microphone/headphone connection as an option.  The "no sound in windows' recognized that the front panel connections exist but insisted that nothing is plugged into those jacks...and my headphone/microphone headset is definitely plugged in.  Can you suggest further steps?

Hi,

Uninstall, reinstall   ‘Sound Video and Game Controllers” and check the issue status.

a) Press Window and X keys together, click on ‘device manger’

b) Expand ‘Sound Video and Game Controllers” and right-click on ‘High Definition Audio Device and select ‘uninstall’.

c) Restart the computer and check the issue status.

If the issue still persists, refer to the following suggestion

You can download the device drive from the device manufacturer. Install the device drive using the compatibility mode and check if that helps in fixing the issue. The steps referred in the following are applicable to Windows 10 technical Preview as well.

Make older programs compatible with this version of Windows

Hope this helps.
