Netflix raises DVD & streaming plan price by 60%

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Netflix Inc will raise by 60 percent the monthly price of a plan that lets subscribers watch unlimited movies and video online and get DVDs by mail.

Customers who want both services will pay $7.99 per month to rent one DVD at a time plus $7.99 for unlimited streaming, or a total of $15.98 per month. The previous cost of this plan was $9.99 a month.

"We are separating unlimited DVDs by mail and unlimited streaming into separate plans to better reflect the costs of each and to give our members a choice: a streaming only plan, a DVD only plan or the option to subscribe to both," Netflix Vice President of Marketing Jessie Becker wrote in a company blog post.

"Given the long life we think DVDs by mail will have, treating DVDs as a $2 add on to our unlimited streaming plan neither makes great financial sense nor satisfies people who just want DVDs," Becker wrote.

Netflix announced the new prices on Tuesday. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

Unlimited DVD-only plans will cost $7.99 for one at a time or $9.99 for two at a time.

The changes take effect immediately for new subscribers, and in September for current customers.

The Los Gatos, California-based company started in the United States as a mail-in DVD service. It now offers streaming video on various devices.

What a complete and utter rip off. The selection of their streaming is pretty poor movie wise, and the TV shows, while offering a good variety still do not have a lot of popular ones on there. In order to justify this price hike they better be purchasing the rights to more channels/movies, otherwise I will be cancelling both my dvd by mail subscription and streaming subscription and just use redbox and watch TV shows online.

I honestly think most of netfilx profit comes from the digital, xbox, ps3, wii, computer, psp, smartphone, dvd players and now even new tv's have built in net flix. Streaming video is what they are moving into less dvds.

I am going to just streaming once they do it.  I think it's complete bull, netflix is turning out huge profits every year and it's only going up.  I have been a customer for over 5 years so for them to stick it to myself and everyone else like this is just crap.  My DVD I don't use much so I will just depend on local places for videos I can't stream from netflix.  I really hope this bites them in the butt and they drop the prices again though

It doesn't matter to me. The streaming only plan is staying the same price...for now.

This. Plus my TV has those snappy internet widgets mentioned earlier; Netflix, YouTube etc.

It's still a great service, totally worth it. Redbox is good if you don't watch much. But if you do wanna watch a bunch of movies/tv shows per month Netflix is better. Don't forget you're getting features along with the price. Does redbox keep a huge list of your movies/tv and send them to you as they come to the top?

Either way my plan went up like 5 bucks. Not a big deal. Considering how good Netflix is I'd gladly support them. Besides from what I read it's not like they're just being greedy, they're offsetting the cost of the studios being greedy because they just realized how awesome streaming is.
