Has anyone tried to plug one of the 3g usb modems from say verizion directly into the 360 s usb port to connect to xbox live? Do you have to plug it into a computer first and then an ethernet cable or get a wireless router to pick up signal?

You have to string it through the computer. USB > Computer > Ethernet > Xbox.
On the computer you have to either bridge the connection or set up Internet connection sharing.
If you need help with doing either of those you can take a look at this: support.xbox.com/.../xbox-kb.aspx

The xbox only reads wires that go to the ethernet part so first connect the 3g usb moderm on a pc or laptop then connect the ethernet cable and share the internet with the xbox

Just a tip. As good as the 3G system is for a phone, that system is really slow in use for something like a gaming console.
