So basic stats out of the way...

Modem brand & model number: NetComm NB14WN Wireless Modem/Router
Router brand & model number:  As above
Network Connection Type: Wireless
If Wireless, what type of encryption are you using? Mixed WPA
Things you have tried:

  • Turned router on and off
  • Changing to WPA2
  • Double checked password
  • Fixed IP
  • Reset factory settings
  • Essentially ran through entire connecting troubleshooting guide

So I am a little bit simple when it comes to these things...so please be gentle!

Connects when wired, but not wireless.  Assuming that wireless is working as finding networks just fine.  Xbox is brand new, connection and modem are also brand new.

If all else fails, can use it wired, but its just really bugging me.

Thanks in advance for helping such a noob!

I've got the same problem. From what I can tell this is a common problem but no one seems to have a fix! So annoying!

Are you using a wireless G or N router? G band is for text and pictures. N is for streaming video and games. Also some router don't work well with the X-Box adapter. You may have one. When I fist got on I was using a Linksy G router. It took three day's but it started working. I always had problems with that router. From what you wrote you NAT should be open. Now one thing to try is call your ISP and see if they have any settings in the modem that prevents the connections Some do and they can or will walk you through turning those settings off. I would try that next. Also does the router see the x-box? It should see the adapter even if you can't connect.

Sign into the config for your router and make sure that a few things are set correctly.

First you want to have your wireless mode set to G only.

Second make sure that you're using either WPA or WPA2 - not the mixed mode security.

Third make sure that you're running your network on a wireless channel that doesn't overlap other networks in your area, ideal channels are usually 1 or 11.

Lastly you'll want to make sure that the router doesn't have a feature called WPS or WSC, also knows as wifi protected setup or wifi simple connect. If it does have either of those turn them off.

Once all that is done restore your xbox network settings to factory defaults by going from:

My Xbox> System Settings> Network Settings> Select your network> Configure Network> Additional Settings. Select restore to factory defaults and then restart the console and try connecting to your network again.

Wireless G networking will work just fine for gaming as long as you don't have a poor wifi signal or a lot of interference, which can commonly be caused by 3rd party headsets like the Turtle Beach X31 or X41 units.

Simple logic on the network will show that G is fully capable of pulling speeds for gaming - G is up to 54 Megabits which translates directly to internet connection speeds - so unless your internet is faster than 54 Megabits your wireless G network will be more than fast enough to service the connection.
