Brand new Wireless N adapter gets very hot, malfunctions

I just bought a new wireless adapter, the N model (black, two antennae). When I initially plug it in, I'm able to connect to my wireless network. As soon as it is finished configuring, I'm connected to Live and told I need to download an update, or I will be disconnected. I proceed with the update. The download will proceed for a variable length of time (usually about 1 minute) before it disconnects with an error.

At this point, if I try to look for wireless networks, none display, even though at least 7 show up during the initial configuration process. Additionally, the wireless adapter is VERY hot, and I do not have it in an enclosure - it is in the open. It seems to get very hot very fast, within just a minute or two of use.

if after I configure the network (and allow the adapter to cool) I decline the Live update, and instead use the network to just connect to my media center on my PC, the adapter also gets hot, so it seems that it is an issue related to use in general, not specific to any download activity.

I have tried 3 different USB ports on the 360, beginning with the one in back. All of them have the same issue.

Is this a problem with the adapter? I just bought it today, and it is new, not used.

Sincerely,

Michael

It could definitely be an issue with the adapter.  Do you have any other usb devices plugged in to the xbox or any other wireless devices in the vicinity (specifically things like wireless speakers or headphones).  If possible, I would try exchanging the adapter.

I have other wireless adapters (iphone, ipad), but even if I remove them from the area, I have the same problem. I don't have any other USB devices plugged in. It definitely seems to me that it is an issue with the adapter, but wanted to check here. Thanks ChimpZealot, I appreciate the feedback.
