Windows Live Movie Maker can't open; UXCore.dll missing from computer?

I asked this question over in the Live essentials section and there was no response at all.  The message states "UXCore.dll missing from computer.  Windows Live Movie Maker cannot open." Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, IE9.  I did try to uninstall/reinstall unsuccessfully. Thank you for considering this question.

I have the same exact problem.  Uninstall / reinstall does not fix.

I think you misread the thread.  The original poster asked a question on June 18th.  A moderator replied on June 19th asking for more details be uploaded and to post a reply once that had been done.  The original poster never replied (or perhaps handled it all in the private message thread).

It seems you are receiving an similar error and have tried some of the standard steps like uninstalling and reinstalling.  While you have essentially hijacked a different thread rather than starting your own, I'm going to assume a moderator will pick up your post and respond similarly.  So in the meantime, you might want to begin gathering your log files.

Hi BarettP,

For us to isolate the cause and troubleshoot your issue, please do a clean installation of Essentials as the installation for Movie Maker might be corrupt. Please follow these steps:

1. Perform a Windows update. Please follow the steps in this article:

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows

2. Please follow the steps in this article on how to uninstall Windows Essentials:

How to uninstall Windows Essentials

3. Go to C:\Program Files and delete Windows Live folder.

4. Go to C:\Program Files\Common Files and delete Windows Live folder.

Note: If there is more than one Program Files folder upon opening C drive, then double click on Program Files x86 instead.

5. Disable your 3rd party firewall temporarily. Please enable it after installation.

6. Reset your browser settings. Open your Internet Explorer browser, click on the Gear icon on the upper right side, and then select Internet Options. Under the Advanced tab, click Reset. Confirm by clicking Reset again.

7. Reinstall Windows Essentials. Please refer to this article for the download link:

Windows Essentials

Thank you.

My bad.  Didn't see that the original poster didn't reply.

I had already attempted the steps above a couple of times prior to posting.  I have determined the file that MovieMaker.exe thinks is missing is in fact there.  I have also copied it to the \systems32 directory and the \wow directory as a precaution.

I have uninstalled and then gone back and deleted the Windows Live folders that were left behind (I have no other Windows Live apps installed except MovieMaker).

I even ran RFC to check for corrupted files.  None were found.

Thanks in advance,

Barrett

From a similar post on this topic... this might be a solution:

Missing UXCore.dll usually occurs when there are corrupted or missing files in Windows Essentials installed in the computer. To resolve this, please perform the steps below:

1. Press Windows + R.

2. Copy and paste the following path

Windows Live\Installer

3. Search for the file uxcore.dll in that folder and rename it to uxcore.old.

4. Restart your computer and inform us if the issue still persists.
