"User profile service failed the log-on" WindowsXP administrator account problem

Ok so my mom cannot log onto her profile on WindowsXP Home Edition. She has the administrator account as well. When she tries to log on, the above error message pops up. My brother can log on to his account no problem.

My mom told me that she had originally gone onto ITunes and downloaded 3 things that the program said she needed. When she went to restart her computer as instructed, she was given that error message and could not log on.

She then went on to the guest account, and managed to delete the 3 programs, but nothing helped. If anyone has any ideas, it would be appreciated. This is the Windows program that came already installed on the computer.

I've tried searching through the forums but its a little confusing. She has also never gotten any 'temporary profile' warnings.

Thanks!

Answer

It sounds like the user profile is corrupted.  In order to recover, you will need to login with an administrator account.  If your mom's was the only administrator account, try booting to Safe Mode (F8 at startup) and log in as user "Administrator".  The default is empty password.  After that, follow the steps in the following KB article:
