Windows 8 refuses to boot, error 0xc0000225 boot\bcd

Hi, I'd like some help with fixing my Windows 8 that came pre-installed with my Lenovo T430.

I needed to dual boot my computer with Windows 8 and another linux distribution (Fedora 18).

As instructed I turned off secure boot from BIOS and disabled UEFI before installation.
I created a separate partition and installed Linux on that.

I now have grub as my Primary boot loader. I see a windows 8 loader entry here, but I can't boot into Windows. As soon as I try to start it, the Windows boot loader returns an error.


Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix this problem:

1. Insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer
2. Choose your language settings and click next
3. Click repair your computer
  File: \Boot\BCDStatus:0xc0000225
  Info:The Boot config data for your PC is missing or contains errors

Since windows came pre-installed I do not have an install CD/USB. I created a boot usb using a friend's ISO. I've tried repairing my windows installation using the troubleshooting tools available on the Install/Recovery media.

The steps I tried included -
1. Fix/Detect Automatically.
2. Went into cmd and tried the following commands:
    - bootrec /fixmbr
    - bootrec /fixboot
    - bootrec /rebuildbcd
    - bootrec /scanos
    They all return successfully, but I still get the same error on rebooting.
3. Running bcdedit returns an error.

I am sure that all my partitions are still intact, i.e the Windows OS partition and the Lenovo Recovery partition are both untouched.

Currently I can't boot up anything when I change the boot option from Legacy to UEFI in bios (Even the recovery media on the USB doesn't load)

I've been pulling my hair out and combing forums all over the internet but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. I don't have any data I'd like to save on either Operating system, but I would like to be able to get this setup up and running as soon as possible.

Any help will be sincerely appreciated.

I would suggest you to contact the manufacturer as UEFI has to be enabled to install Windows 8. You can contact them on the link given below.

Hi Pranav,

I disabled UEFI via the advanced options from inside of windows. I did not directly change it via the BIOS.

Enabling UEFI from BIOS does not let me boot anything, either from the recovery USB or the Windows 8 present on my Hard Disk.

I have contacted my local Lenovo support here in India, and they have summarily refused to provide me with recovery disks or my Windows Product Key, stating that the cause for my troubles is that I "Partitioned the C Drive" and that I should have "contacted them" before doing so. They also state that this is not covered under warranty and I have been asked to purchase a new copy of windows and install that. I fail to understand why this is unnecessary, since my pre-installed windows is also essentially purchased.

Any help on either front will be appreciated.

The disks you need are not the same as a Win 8 installation DVD...

They restore your machine to as delivered from the factory...

They install the RECOVERY Partition that the recovery disks would have been burned from if you had made your own.

The price for these disks is usually quite reasonable... Probably less than $20.00 US...

 

One of the reasons that your bcdedit fails is due to the extra partitions... it's looking at the wrong one...

You might try Dir (Drive letter) to identify the correct partition letter and set it as the default..

 

Try typing in the .cmd, just the drive letter... z: for instance, and try again

I didn't quite get what you're saying. Are you saying that the windows 8 installation disk will restore my Machine to the way it was when I got it delivered from the factory? If so then I don't mind, since the machine hadn't been with me for more than 3 days before it became unusable.

If you're saying I should burn my RECOVERY Partition to a disk and use those, I can try doing that since that partition is still accessible to me, but could you please give me details regarding how to do this? My Computer does not have a DVD Drive, so I can only use USB ports and I'm not sure how exactly to make use of that ~10GB Partition.

I'm not very clear about how you're asking me to fix the bcdedit either... dir C:\ should take me to the C drive. Which is my Drive containing the windows installation, I run bcdedit after this, is there anything else I should be doing?

Not the installation Disk, but the RECOVERY DISKS... probably a set of 3 disks +\-.

They will rewrite your entire hard drive, not just windows.

 

In your case you will need a flash drive...

If you were to order RECOVERY DISKS, it may in fact be a Flash Drive instead... I have no experience with ultrabooks, and very little with bootable flash drives.

 

I found this for a Win 7 model like yours... but you need to be able to boot into windows to do it...

Your method may vary a little, but it will give you an idea what I'm talking about and what to look for.

 

Creating and using a rescue medium

 

 

With a rescue medium, such as a disc or a USB hard disk drive, you can recover the computer from failures

that prevent you from gaining access to the Rescue and Recovery workspace on your hard disk drive.

 

Notes:

 

 

1. The recovery operations you can perform using a rescue medium vary depending on the operating

system.

2. The rescue disc can be started in all types of optical drives.

 

Creating a rescue medium

 

 

This section provides instructions on how to create a rescue medium.

To create a rescue medium, do the following:

 

1. From the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Programs ➙ Lenovo ThinkVantage Tools ➙ Enhanced

Backup and Restore. The Rescue and Recovery program opens.

2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window, click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arrow.

3. Click the Create Rescue Media icon. The Create Rescue and Recovery Media window opens.

4. In the Rescue Media area, select the type of the rescue medium you want to create. You can create a

rescue medium using a disc, a USB hard disk drive, or a secondary internal hard disk drive.

5. Click OK and follow the instructions on the screen to create a rescue medium.

 

Using a rescue medium

 

This section provides instructions on how to use the rescue medium you have created.

• If you have created a rescue medium using a disc, use the following instructions to use the rescue medium:

1. Turn off your computer.

2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the computer. When the Boot Menu is

displayed, release the F12 key.

3. In the Boot Menu window, select the desired optical drive as the first boot device. Then, insert the

rescue disc into the optical drive and press Enter. The rescue medium starts.

 

Also.. about the bcdedit and fixmbr and etc.

 

The dir C:\ is just to confirm which partition\ drive letter your installation disk has assigned to your Win 8 OS... When you have multiple partitions\drives, a lot of times the letters are different when booting from the disk then they would be when booting with Win 8.

 

As a result the cmds fail... if dir c:\ is in fact your Win 8 OS, then that's not the problem.

You might find that Win 8 is on d, f, x , or whatever when you boot from the Win 8 disk.

Does your computer have this feature...

 

The Lenovo OneKey Recovery system is software designed to back up and restore your computer. You can use it to restore the system partition to its original status in case of a system failure. You can also create user backups for easy restoration as required.

 

Note: To utilize the features of the OneKey Recovery system, your hard disk already includes a hidden partition by default to store the system image file and the OneKey Recovery system program files. This default partition is hidden for security reasons, which explains why the available disk space is less than the stated capacity...

 

If you, and it works, it will wipe everything except your Lenovo Recovery Partition, but will return your machine as factory delivered..

 

 

Restoring

You can choose to restore the system partition to its original status or to a

previously created back-up point. To restore the system partition:

1 Press the Novo button to start the Lenovo OneKey Recovery system.

2 Click System Recovery. The computer will restart to the recovery environment.

3 Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system partition to its

original status or to a previously created back-up point.

 

 

 

If Windows cannot be started, then follow the steps below to start the Lenovo

OneKey Recovery system:

1 Shut down the computer.

2 Press the Novo button. From the Novo button menu, select the Lenovo

OneKey Recovery system and press Enter

I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear, but I can't boot into windows at all. All the methods you describe (creating a recovery medium for example) here will require me to boot into windows in form or the other. The recovery system (One key recovery) that you mention does not seem to be available to me via a hardware key, and as I mentioned previously, I can't boot into windows.

Lenovo is not willing to provide me with recovery disks at this time, they have directed me to purchase a new copy of windows, which I am not inclined to do.

If you have any other suggestions, they are very welcome.

Lenovo's website isn't real clear about which machines have the NOVO button and which don't...

 

Have you tried tapping the F12 key repeatedly as you are powering on?

 

You might consider using a bootable 3rd party partitioning\disk management program to "HIDE" all of the extra partitions except Win 8 OS, and try the Boot Repairs again...

Not sure if this is still an issue, but I had it this morning... Booted using windows 8.1 media, selected regional settings, then clicked on Repair My Computer... Navigated to option to use a command prompt (sorry, don't have the exact steps in front of me)... Once at a command prompt:

'bcdboot c:\windows' - this recreates the necessary boot files (assumes your systemroot is c:\windows)

'bcdedit' - this shows you the entries in the bcd store... you'll see at least two entries for Windows 8.x...  One of them will say current and maybe something about a particular volume and the other will just say 8.x, because we just added it using the bcdboot command... Copy the identifier for this latter one, we need to delete it or Windows will present us with two options to boot from.

Back at the command prompt - 

'bcdedit /delete {identifier}' - this will delete the additional windows entry... reboot and windows should boot normally...
