Windows 7 installation won't get past the "expanding files" step of the installation.

original title: Windows 7 Won't install!

Hello, I'm having all sorts of trouble with this computer I built a while back. I'm not an expert on computers, I vaguely know my way around bios and I know how to put together a computer. Anyways, everything was going fine until one day I come home to find my computer shut down. I try to turn it on, and everything goes well, until it gets to the windows loading screen. From there it tells me windows has failed to start, which brings me to system recovery. I ran the start up repair, only to be told that there was nothing to be found wrong with my computer. So I put in my windows 7 cd, and ran the repair tool, which didn't do anything either. So I tried to reformat and reinstall windows. But now windows won't even install. The first few times I couldn't get past the "expanding files" portion of windows installation, and I would end up getting a random error, different every time. Thinking it was a disc problem, I put in my vista CD. I couldn't get past the "expanding files" on vista either. It would go from 90-100% to a restart, straight back to the "boot from CD/DVD" screen. After reading online I came across a solution that it was a RAM problem. I have two 4gb sticks of ddr3 ram. So I tried switching the ram slots on both to fresh ones on my mb. Then tried installing again. Same thing. Afterwards I tried taking each ram stick out and trying them individually. I finally got windows to install on my second stick of ram. But after the restart, I got a blue screen. So I restarted again only to get the "bootmngr missing" or whatever. So I stuck my windows cd back in, and ran the cmd console, and typed the bootrec /fixboot command, only to bring me to another "boot from CD/DVD" screen.

I'm stuck -.- any suggestions?

The first thing you need to do is resolve those RAM issues.  If your RAM is faulty, you're not going to get anywhere with anything.  There's a RAM diagnostic you can download from

 http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,64964-order,1-page,1/description.html

and there're some you can download from

http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?tag=pfindersrch&searchtype=downloads&query=memory+diagnostic&filter=platform=Windows|&filterName=platform=Windows|

Windows 7 has a built in one you could run if you can get to it also.

I hope this helps.  Good luck.

1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD
2. Restart your computer
3. When asked if you want to boot from your DVD drive, do so.
4. Choose your language, click Next.
5. Click 'Repair your computer'
6. Select operating system you want to repair.
7. On the System Recovery window, click Memory diagnostics option

Restart your system, a scan of your memory of your memory modules will take place to check for any defects.

I would try disconnecting all components such as video, network, audio and disconnect any non-essential devices you might have attached to the system then attempt the installation again.

If you have a spare hard disk, I would also try installing on that and see if it completes.

Andre

I did all of that. Didn't receive an error. Just restarted straight after and received a windows boot manager error. I just ordered a 1TB harddrive, but it's external. Do you know if there's a way you can try installing windows on it? And is there a chance that the windows built in version of the memory scan isn't very accurate?

No, you can't install Windows 7 on an external hard disk. I would try running another memory scan using the following:

try running Memtest86+, this runs from a boot disk or CD and should eliminate or
confirm if your one or more of your memory sticks are bad or the SPD values in the BIOS are correct.
Let it run for as long as you can: 2,4,6,8 or more hours, if no errors by then your ram is OK.

Also make sure your BIOS is updated.

Its possible the installation media might be corrupt, try downloading an ISO image and attempt installation with it:

Windows 7 Professional x64 (64-bit)

Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (64-bit)

ImgBurn - In addtion to supporting the creation of CD's from .ISO files,
it supports a wide range of other image file formats, and it's free.

Download and install Gear ISO burn (Free):

I don't think it's a problem with the media being corrupt, because I've used my Windows 7 32 bit, 64 bit, vista 32 and 64 and windows xp cd's. But I'll try using memtest, and if that doesn't work I'll try a burned version! Thanks! I'll be back soon!

Try reducing the amount of installed RAM to one stick and see if it completes the installation.

You could also try installing again and let it run overnight and see if it completes.

I've been running off of a stick of ram for a while now. And I also tried running a burned version. Same thing. Got an error. Gonna try a different stick of ram. An old 512 mb ddr2. I'm not sure if it's compatible but might as well try it.

Hello Sicknam

You need at least 1GB of ram on the system to install and run Windows. Make sure you have at least that much in your system. Have you had any other success with the replaced memory stick that you've put in? Let us know. Thanks.
