Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 Destroys Windows Update

OS:  Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit edition

Steps to produce:

-Erase HD with Darik's Boot & Nuke

-Install Win7 Ultimate x64 from original DVD (pre-SP1)

    Note - Have done with and without activation number during Setup, as well as with and without network cable connected during Setup

-[Optional] - Manually Install Windows 7 SP1

-[Optional] - Manually install IE11x64 to avoid IE8

-Iterate Windows Update cycles until complete or until failure

In all cases, with or without SP1 or IE11 manual updates, once Windows Update Ageent 7.6.7600.3200 is non-optionally installed, Windows Update ceases to ever return from "Checing for Updates"

I've searched and run into many alleged solutions, none of which have worked.  Normally I'd give up and do a clean install after being stymied for so long, but that obviously doesn't work.

if Windows 7 have troubles to find updates, causing high CPU or RAM usage with the process Svchost.exe, it is due that Windows Update was not able to update automatically the Windows Update Client.

in this case, you need to download the update manually, this is the most recent version for now: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

I also experienced issues with Windows Update searching forever for updates when Windows Update 7.6.7600.320 was automatically installed after updating the system to SP1 (this was after doing a clean install of Windows 7).

The following worked for me:

1. Manually install KB3083710

2. Manually install KB3102810

3. Restart computer

4. Run Windows Update Diagnostic Tool in order to reset Windows Update (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058)

5. Restart computer again and search for updates

This seemed to have fixed it for me too! At least, instead of 'searching for updates' to infinity, i am now downloading 229 updates, 37% and going on strong.

The other suggested solution with the  WSUS Offline Update gave me virus warnings, so i skipped that.
