Windows 10 Upgrade Error 8024201C

I have a PC running Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1. I've been having problems getting the Windows 10 Upgrade on my computer. But I was able to finally get "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" to show up in my Windows Update. Unfortunately, I run into a problem after downloading it. The download completes, but then I get an error code 8024201C. I've tried looking it up, and I haven't had any luck finding anything about that error code or what I need to do to move past this and finally upgrade to Windows 10.

I found one post about it and someone asked about security applications. (This topic was for the Technical Preview back in January), but I'm just using Microsoft Security Essentials. I'm hoping maybe someone will know what I have to do in order to resolve this error and upgrade.

I would suggest you to try the following steps:

Method 1:

Run Windows Update troubleshooter and check if it helps

Method 2:

Check if issue persists in clean boot.

Note: Reset the computer to start as normal. Refer step 3.

Try upgrading to Windows 10 using this tool and let us know.

I've tried using the Media Creation Tool MULTIPLE times. Every time I do "something happened". And SOMETIMES it'll give me the Error Code "0x8009000F - 0x90002".

I can't offer any help, but I'm having the same issue trying to upgrade from 8.1.

Same error messages and the same when trying to use the media creation tool. I've had to disable the update in my windows update list to stop it keeping trying and eating up gbs of bandwidth in yet another failed attempt.

Is the upgrade to Windows 10 still free through Media Creation Tool? I got the same error, 8024201C when trying to upgrade using the " Get Windows 10" icon on the taskbar. So I tried to upgrade using the Media Creation Tool, but it said I have to have a product key. I'm trying to upgrade on my HP desktop which runs Windows 7. I had no problem upgrading my Dell Venue 8 Pro which ran Windows 8.1.

I've managed to get past the obscure error code reported and install windows 10 by doing the 'answer' in this thread: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/windows-81-installation-failure-error-code/2bf5a9d4-def9-4331-8574-cd6a4da51089

Good day, I had some troubles downloading Win 10, but I followed the steps to do a clean boot, and after that I used the media creation tool, it worked perfectly!! Thanks you guys!!

Nope - tried that and got as far as 37% -  but without a 'Helpful' error code.

I'm going to try the 'clean boot' option tomorrow and I'll let you know how I get on.

I had this issue and after digging with Process Monitor found that it was a permissions issue.

The upgrade process runs under the "System" account and you should check that this account has modify permissions on the c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys folder.

How does one modify permissions for the "System" account?  Also, I cannot seem to find the folder you're referencing on my C: drive.  Running Windows 8.1 Pro
