Window10 Upgrade Always Ends Up on a "Choose an option" screen

When I use the free win10 upgrade on my laptop from win8.1 to windows10, the updates are downloaded (about 3GB) and then the machine restarts, after which it takes me to a "choose an option" screen, which I have never seen before.  However the main option is "Continue: Exit and continue to Windows 8.1"

Well, I thought I was installing 10.

I selected the 8.1 option, went back to updates, and it started to download everything all over again!

How do I actually proceed with the upgrade?

Thanks

Dave

Depending on how you perform the installation, you might be creating a dual boot setup.

Review how to upgrade manually:

Pre-requisite Task

When making significant changes to your computer such as updating the operating system, you should always backup. See links to resources about backing up by clicking the link for the respective version of Windows you are running: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1

then

then

  • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
  • Restart a few times then try again.
  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
  • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
  • Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.
  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.
  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

Thanks for that.

I was just following the upgrade instructions that pop up at you all the time when using other versions of windows.

It takes you through all the steps, however arrives at that "options" page.

I don't really want to install from scratch - I guess I just leave it on 8.1 and accept the nags.

I posted a short video.

The elapsed time was over 30 minutes, that was after the update had downloaded 99%, however I cut out and sped up to a 2min video with just the key parts.

So, anyone?  I get nagged and nagged and nagged to upgrade windows, with no way to remove the nags, and then when I finally relent, and follow the onscreen steps exactly, I spend three hours going in circles and get no where.

At least the nag seems to have gone.

Hello, any update.  It's ironic that I did not want to update to win10 and it prompted me 20 times a day, and now I finally do, and I cannot...

Hi,

Thank you for coming back to us with the current status.

I suggest you to upgrade to Windows 10 using Windows 10 media creation tool and check. Download and create Windows 10 ISO from the below link.

I am only upgrading to get rid of these nags, which microsoft force on us, and don't allow us to disable!!

Then when I click the button on screen "upgrade now", I have to lose my laptop for hours, and get nowhere.

Now I have to download and create media and take time installing that way....  just to get rid of a nag I never wanted in the first place.

aaaaaarrrrrggggggghhhhh!
