How to stop Windows Defender Definitions Update after installing another AV & Security Software

I have  Surface Pro 4 with Win 10.  I initially started out using Windows Defender but decided to switch to Norton 360.  The issue that I am experiencing is that Windows Defender continues to try to install definitions. I would like to know if there is a way to stop Windows Update from downloading and trying to install the Defender Definition Updates?

Hi John,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community, we appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

I understand your concern to uninstall the Windows updates for Windows Defender on Windows 10, we will help you with this issue.

Do let us know the KB number for the Windows Defender update you are trying to stop the updated for?

I would like to inform that, Microsoft has also released an application that allows you to hide updates and thus prevent Windows from reinstalling them until a revised version becomes available.

Download the troubleshooter wushowhide.diagcab from Microsoft; it’s a standalone application, no installation required.

Refer: How to temporarily prevent a Windows or driver update from reinstalling in Windows 10

When you deploy the standalone application, search for the KB number for Windows Defender installed, place a check mark on that and follow the on-screen instructions.

NOTE:

  • Microsoft will not recommend the user to hide the updates, as the latest updates released will have the fixes for the previous updates and security updates will also be offered for the users.

  • Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Usage of Third Party Software are done at your own risk.

Hope it helps. Reply to the post with an updated status of this issue, we will be happy to help you accordingly.
