No Refresh/re-rendering on parts of a program window

I'm having a consistent fault were parts of a programs window will not refresh/redraw/re-render. To list programs that I've encountered with suffer from are: Chrome and Visual Studio. As they have different developers I assumed this to be a Windows fault. It is not consistent in the area that is affected in the Window. The affected area(s) will either have a previous rendered frames content or be white.

The solutions I have found are inconsistent at best and revolve around moving the cursor/pointer around the area affected. Or re positioning or resizing the whole Window.

My colleague is also experiencing the same faults. We have an Acer and Lenovo respectively. We both have Intel CPU's and with Intel chips handling graphics as well. We are also running multiple monitor setups.

Is anyone else having this issue? Any recommendations on how to resolve this

My PC Specs:

GPU: Intel(R) Iris(TM) Graphics 6100

What are you trying to see by the screenshot?  A non-updated screen...  Think about it.... you will see something that looks normal (but wrong and a screen shot will not show this) until I go to the line again, scroll some, or resize the window. THEN it will show up. (a screenshot here will also look normal)

I can say for me it happens mainly on my extended screens (not laptop screen) probably because they are what I use as my primary work space instead of my laptop screen.  I don't know if it happens or not on my main display.

It happens in Visual studio in the main code window and sometimes in the Solution Explorer.  When I can coding along, sometimes I have to scroll up and back down to see what was typed.

It happens in the SQ Server Management Studio on the Main code window area.  The results pane is sometimes affected, but is harder to detect because I always scroll to see results.

This also happens on other random applications (impossible to save and give screenshots here.)  One example is SourceTree by Atlassian.   Sometimes when I commit a change, it will not show the results bar (screen update).  I am sure other programs are experiencing the same type of thing, but hard to tell since the SCREEN DOES NOT UPDATE.  Get the problem?

It is as if the window redraw function is not making it to the application windows to initiate the redraw.

Computer specs:

Lenovo E560 Laptop

Intel($) Core(TM) I7-6500U CPU @ 2.50GHz  2.60 GHz

250GB SSD

16.0 GB

Graphics

     Intel(R) HD Graphics 520

     AMD Radeon R7 M370

Plugable UD-3900 (DisplayLink driver version 8.0.762.0)

Kensington M01063 (DisplayLink driver version 8.0.762.0)
Kensington M01063 (DisplayLink driver version 8.0.762.0)
Windows 10 pro 64-bit (version 1607 build 14393.321)

I have 4 monitors (via Displaylink) + Laptop screen

edit: I have finally found another person with the same problem after looking for months and just ignoring the issue.

Below is an example of a screen tear (non-refresh) that just happened...  I will post more examples as they crop up in different applications, as it is not limited to just one.

I am having trouble getting other screenshots as everytime I hit the Alt-Printscreen, the screen repaints for the screenshot and has a clear shot.

Frustrating.

Got one for Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.

This one was just when I was editing a line in the query.

The results pane after running the query was also not showing the horizontal scroll bar until I minimized and unminimized the window.

Hi Ian,

Please find attached a screenshot of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio where the fault is occurring. The black bars on the bottom of the main view appear after a resize to full screen.

Here are the versions numbers of the application too:

It also happened in Visual Studio Community 2015:

I have removed certain elements in the page, such as file names, file content and project name. The fault I wanted to highlight is on the top right and center left where the screen is not refreshing correctly.

I had this obvious one that would not resolve itself.  It was on a secondary monitor.   When I moved the app to the

primary monitor, it seemed to resolve itself.

This is a screenshot of Microsoft Enterprise manager.

Second monitor was driven by a Displaylink adapter driver date 8/17/2016 version 8.0.762.0 but I know core Displaylink drivers are integrated into windows 10 now.

I cropped the below image so too much information would not be shared.

I have noticed that this screen tearing/non-refreshing happens much more often when the CPU utilization is high.  It is as if the windows native displaylink driver skips some of the refresh calls to save processing power.  I know that it is not the right term for it, but that is what it appears to do.  The screen refresh problem does not seem to affect the main display that is not on a displaylink usb device.

Hi Ian,

I work for DisplayLink (chip and driver allowing to easily add many screens through USB, taking benefit from the new driver archi available in RS).

We have flagged this trough VSO 8460616.

Issue is visible in Print Screen so before pixels are handed over to our driver.

Issue is more visible with 3+ indirect displays.

All readers:

You can force the screen to update by doing a window resizing (double click on title bar). The mouse over or scroll is not working on things like Chrome or the Systray which will have the clock stopped in time.

Kind regards,

Alban

Hi

Same issue after upgrade to windows 1607, worked perfect in 1507.

Hardware:

HP EliteBook 850 G3 with Intel HD Graphics 520 (driver 20.19.15.4483)

Dell D3100 USB3.0 Dock (driver 8.0.762.0)

I'm using 2 monitors both 24inch and laptop screen is closed all the time.

Happens more on high cpu usage

Happens most in cmd.exe and powershell windows.

Issue solved when connecting Displayport cable from second screen direct to a port on the laptop and first screen on the dell dock.

Kind regards,

Johan

I have had this issue since the Anniversary Update was released and since then there have been several new Windows updates that have solved the issue. Over many months with this issue my observation is also that the situation is much worst when there is load on the processor, but not always. For instance running som synthetic CPU load will not necessarily trigger the issue.

However here are few pictures taken both with a camera and with PrintScreen (as Alban wrote PrintScreen captures the issue).

Also here is a link to a short video which shows the issue live: VideoPaintIssue

Nothing painted in the middle and the "working on it" is a remain form the previous painting. Moving the mouse up and down the missing lines will appear where the mouse moves (see also the video linked above)
