How to force install a driver on Windows 10?

I have an Asus laptop on which I'm trying to install a newer driver for Intel HD Graphics in order to fix an issue I'm having with flickering in full screen games. Unfortunately, the newest officially available driver for my laptop doesn't fix the issue. For this reason I downloaded the driver with the fix from Intel's website. I used the "Browse my computer for driver software" option in Device Manager and pointed it to the folder with the driver, but instead of installing the driver, I got the message saying that I already have the best driver for my device already installed and that I should check the manufacturer's website (which has an outdated version of the driver).

Is there any way to install this driver?

Answer
Answer

Force install a driver

I cannot tell whether or not you would be right to force this particular driver on your particular system but I can respond to the procedural aspect of your question.

To force install a driver that does not come with an installation exe file -

Device manager,

right-click on the existing entry,

Update driver,

Browse my computer ...,

Let me pick ...,

Have disk,

Browse to the driver's folder,

Select its inf file,

Open,

OK,

select the correct hardware from the list if there are multiple entries shown,

Next,

then it will install even if it older or less suitable.
