Unable to reinstall an HP printer driver on Windows 10, versions 1709 and 1803

If I uninstall my old HP printer driver and then try to reinstall it, the printer driver fails to install.  Similarly, when Windows Update tries to install a new driver for my HP printer, the printer driver fails to install.

Answer

There was a known issue in Windows 10, versions 1709 and 1803, that could prevent the reinstallation of HP printer drivers if you uninstalled and then tried to reinstall the printer driver.  This issue could also prevent the installation of new HP printer drivers through Windows Update, since that process also involves uninstalling and reinstalling an HP printer driver.

A resolution for that issue is included in Windows 10, version 1809 and later versions.  To resolve your issue, make sure your Windows 10 version is up-to-date.

Check which version of Windows you are running and if necessary, update Windows 10.
