Major issues with KB3000850

Hello support,

I installed the KB3000850 update last night and have been dreading it ever since. I am unable to access parts of the desktop as they simply do not launch for e.g my computer, my keyboard lighting no longer works, start-up programs not loading. i am unable to system restore as it requires the machine to restart and it just sits on "restarting" for over an hour or until using hard reset.

I am using Avast internet security which i have tried numerous times to uninstall as many avast users have reported the issue is semi solved when doing this but it doesn't fully un-install as i am unable to restart the pc without having to hard reset it (hold the button).

I have done the normal route of sfc /scannow which returns the following message "windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations" I hope this means windows itself is "ok" and this is just a minor bug.

I have tried to use a system restore point which was made 10 hours prior to updating to the KB3000850 but i either receive the following message of "Windows is unable to boot" or "something went wrong please use a restore point and pray for the best.

I have also tried to uninstall the update through uninstall programs > updates but it gets to 99% and says the task can't be completed.

I had issues in May with the 355 update when that was rolled out been unable to install it correctly for over a month until it was patched. I simply can't wait 30days of leaving my Pc running 24/7 unless i use hard shutdown option all the time. Is there anything i can do with providing logs for MS tech guys in finding and resolving this issue.

If a full format is the only option what do i do? My pc was a custom pc which came with a OEM windows 8 key do i contact the system builder to provide me with a cd / flash drive as i never received one just the OEM MS genuine sticker on the side of my corsair case. System builder was - www.scan.co.uk

Spec's are (if it helps in diagnosing issues)

Intel core i5 3570k

16gb corsair ram

EVGA Nvidia 660TI

256 SSD (used for OS)

1TB HDD for work stuff

Corsair H80i cooler (thank god the software isnt required to load for it to function correctly)

I am pulling (what's left) of my hair out trying to remove this update as things worked perfectly before and i had been gaming most of the evening until windows update said "updates are ready".... Lesson learned... wait a few days next time for issues to be solved.

Thank you in advance

This update broke my Samsung tablet.  I do not have Avast only Microsoft Defender.

The update successfully installed and asked to reboot.  I rebooted and the computer did the installing updates to 100% and then started a 'reboot'  at that time the computer never came back.

I let it run for about 10minutes and then stopped it.  Tried a few time to boot it up -- it did not boot.

I brought it up in restore/limp mode (pwer + volume up).  I cannot refresh -- 'drive locked'.  I cannot reimage -- says partition is missing.  However, if I go to the command Prompt, the C drive is there and chkdsk shows no errors.

Microsoft really messed this one.  Very similar to the April 2014 Rollup problems:

You would have thought they would have tested it better.

Not Necessarily An Isolated Avast Issue!

Although, my scenario doesn't have the impact on the system that some others are experiencing. My Windows 8.1 build has Windows Defender installed. I don't think it is a security program issue. The "optional" KB3000850 update of about 724MB, takes a long while to download and install on my usually speedy PC. After the process it requires a restart of course with a warning to not shut off the PC. Each time, when the process advances to 8% completion, my system attempts to reboot about four times. When the Login screen finally appears, I enter my password and it again prompts me to be patient as the system is configured. After a few minutes a message is displayed that the update could not be completed and the changes to the system are being reverted. So my environment isn't being damaged, but I can neither install this KB3000850 update, nor get rid of it.

I have a custom build:

ASUS Deluxe Dual

Intel i7 - 4770K 3.50Ghz

Windows 8.1 Pro - 64Bit

32GB

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost

Samsung 840 SSD 128Gb

WD VelociRaptor  1 Tb

I have been experiencing some issues my self... It takes loads of time for Windows 8.1 to completely load (it used to be very fast) and it doesn't shutdown.

Avast does not startup and does not uninstall. I get a program error and questioned if I want to remove Avast from the list of programs, even if I'm completely sure it still exists (and in fact is now running).

I tried unninstalling the update but couldn't, so windows reinstalled it...

Just to update... I tried system restore twice and twice the system restore didn't finish... Now I can't acesse control panel, system, programs and features..nothing.

EDIT: OK system and program features now load, but take ages... When undoing system restore, I can't get past a "Restarting" screen and am forced to force shutdown and the restart....

Way to go Microsoft!

You can restore via a recovery drive.  Alternatively, manually hit the "reset" button when you see the little loading bubble for Windows.  After you do this twice Windows should boot you into a recovery menu.  Once this happens, go to "Advanced," then "Other Options," and hit "System Restore."  This was the only way I managed to salvage my system from catastrophic failure.

I've got 3 computers with W8.1. 2 indentical DELL M4700 and 1 Intel NUC. None of the computers has AVAST or any other third parity antivirus installed. Using Windows Defender included i W8.1. My NUC installed the update just fine and everything seams to work. My first M4700 never started downloading the update. Maybe because I used it at the same time. I left that computer not installing. Thought of getting it a go the day after. I guess that's not going to happen. My second M4700 installed teh update end rebooted. Didn't notice any strange behavior. The problem begun when I tried to start programs. vmware Workstation didn't start. All Portable Apps didn't start. IE started and worked in "Metro mode" but as soon as I tried to switch to Desktop View it freezes the crashes. I was lucky and was able to rescue my computer by using a restore point.

Well I see this update has broken Avast AV but it has fixed a one year old Windows Explorer RAM issue for Webroot SecureAnywhere when Win 8.1 x64 first came out see here: https://community.webroot.com/t5/Webroot-SecureAnywhere-Antivirus/Explorer-exe-using-up-to-300mb-RAM/td-p/60523 and after KB3000850: https://community.webroot.com/t5/Webroot-SecureAnywhere-Antivirus/Explorer-exe-using-up-to-300mb-RAM/m-p/173343#M10637

I used the microsoft guidance by doing the following, go to programs and features, select windows updates in the uninstall section, find KB3000850 and select uninstall. The system will ask to reboot. Select reboot and wait about 5 minutes, then hard shut down and restart, the pc will configure updates and then you can log on to your windows account. This worked for me, I can now have the system shut down and restart like normal again.

The microsoft article said not to use the system restore feature for this specific update but to use the uninstaller instead.

The computer may crash if you restore the system to a restore point that was created before update rollup 3000850 was installed

Notes

  • This problem applies only to Windows 8.1 editions.
  • An installation of a Windows update typically creates a restore point to which the system can be rolled back in case the installation or the updates causes any problems. In this case, the computer may experience startup failures if you try to roll back the system to a restore point that was created before you installed update rollup 3000850.
  • If the computer has Windows Recovery Environment (WRE) configured, the system automatically restores itself to the last-known working state.

Workaround
To work around this problem, use the Programs and Features item in Control Panel instead of System Restore. To do this, click View installed updates in the navigation panel in Programs and Features, select KB3000850 in the list, and then click Uninstall.

I experienced a different problem after installing KB3000850. I could no longer open RDS Published applications.

When I logged in on Remote Desktop Services Web Access, I could start the published applications but it suddenly gave me a second login prompt. After I re-entered my credentials, it kept saying 'starting' and the window eventually disappeared.

I've tried this on different RDS environments I administer for different customers; same issue on each one of them, so it was definitely a problem with my Windows 8.1 client.

I also tested on a second Windows 8.1 machine with update 3000850 installed. Same issue.

Windows 7 client, no issues.

I remove update 3000850 using programs and Features and after rebooting, I could use the RDS Published Apps once again.

I don't use Avast, so this RDS Published App issue has nothing to do with Avast, but just with KB3000850.

Should I post this as a new thread?

I have the exact same problem. I also have 2 machines where the update will NOT uninstall for nothing and two others I uninstalled it from and of those 2, 1 works and the other is getting a MS Licensing protocol error when trying to start the remote app.

I also had issues with this update (KB3000850) after installing it the monitor on my Dell Alienware M17x R3 stopped working.

I attached a external monitor and powered off / on then i cloud use the external monitor to try to reinstall nvidia drives, but the only thing that worked was removing update KB3000850 since it was the only update installed yestoday is was easy to find.

Hopefully Microsoft makes a fix for the update.
