"Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file" error message on mounting ISO under Windows 8.1

I have an ISO image of a DVD on a flash drive, and I have two Windows tablets: A Dell Venue 8 Pro, and a Microsoft Surface 3 Pro. When I plug the flash drive into the Dell and double-click the ISO file, it mounts. When I do the same on the Surface, I get an error message: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file." The funny thing is that the ISO file actually mounts and works fine in spite of the error message. Both tablets have all updates applied. The only obvious difference is that one is a 32-bit operating system and the other 64-bit.

It's just an annoyance, but I'd like to fix it.

Things I have tried:

  • Verified that File Explorer is the default program for opening ISO files
  • Copied the ISO file to the internal C: drive
  • Looking for errors in the Event Log (nothing found)

Do you have any external USB drives connected to the Surface?

Let's analyze and identify the cause of the issue.

This issue normally occurs when you have drive letter conflicts.

I would suggest you to change the drive letter from disk management and check the results. Follow the steps provided.

a. Press the WinKey+X to display the system menu and select Disk Management.

b. Right click the drive you want to change and select the Change drive letter and paths option.

c. Click the Change button and follow the instructions.

I have the problem with or without an external USB drive. There is just the C: internal drive and the D: MicroSD card. Not much complexity to cause a drive letter conflict.

Nevertheless, I did re-letter the MicroSD card to S: and that made the error message go away. Now I have to find all the things that changing the drive letter broke and fix them.

Thanks for the solution, but a bug fix would have been better.
