Office 2016 crashes at startup ...

Since upgrading to 2016 I've had issues with Office 2016 (Word, Excel, Outlook, OneNote) where they will start and then crash (need repair).  With each after I start (with or without an existing file) this happens several times and then seems fine until I reboot again.

I've done the quick repair and have done complete uninstalls (using the clean uninstall tool) and reinstalled all without changing these symptoms.

Please advise.

Hi Lionel,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Office Community.

Let's try following methods and verify the result.

Method 1:

Try performing an Online Repair of the Office suite following instructions mentioned in the article below and see if it helps:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repair-office-programs-HA010357402.aspx

Method 2:

If issue still persist start the computer in clean boot following instructions in the article below and verify the result:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: Ensure to restart the computer in normal mode after troubleshooting is completed. Above article also applicable to Windows 10.

Clean boot is performed to disable all start up programs and 3rd party services on the machine and check if they are conflicting with the Office program. If so, you may disable the unwanted software those conflict with the suite or get them updated.

Try the suggestions and let me know the result at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Hi Lionel,

Thank you for reply.

This issue could be due to any add-in, let's try starting the Office applications in safe mode as mentioned in the article below and verify the result.
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/support/why-cant-i-start-my-office-2013-application-HA104011864.aspx

Hope it helps. Keep us posted on the status and we will be glad to offer our assistance.

Thank you.

Tried safe mode with Excel - it started but couldn't find personal so that was a stopper.

I then tried unchecking load/start for each add-in individually - I have three add-ins. Each time had the same problem at startup.  Starting excel by right-clicking the taskbar icon and selecting "Excel 2016" allowed it to start and then I ignored the recovery file and it started and I tried the next add-in.  Clicking on a desktop icon for one of my workbooks always fails. Clicking on the taskbar icon itself fails most of the time.

I'm using Windows 10 64bit with Office 365 (2016) 32bit and am current on all maintenance.

Hi Lionel,

Thank you for keeping us updated.

Right click on the files and select Run as Administrator and verify the result.

If issue still persist let's disable compatibility mode for Office and verify the result.

1) Go to the following location:

c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\

2) Right-click Winword, select Troubleshoot compatibility.

Note: Repeat this process for other Office applications (, Outlook and Onenote.exe) as well.

3) Right click on the Setup file and then click on Properties and go to Compatibility tab.

4) Under Compatibility tab uncheck the option Run this program in compatibility mode for and then click on OK.

Hope it helps. Reply with the result and I'll be happy to help you further.

Thank you.

Tried this - found the files in C:|Program Files (x86)

After several attempts at complete/clean uninstalls and reinstalls I've found yet another issue and that is the complete lack of support for iCloud for Windows so with Outlook I no longer have access to my contacts/calendar.

Thus as I type this I am removing Office 2016 and plan to install Office 2013 (thanks for Microsoft Office 365 support for their help with that).
