Outlook 2010 does not show PNG images

Outlook 2010 is not displaying any PNG images in e-mails I receive. I already have it set to automatically download images. JPEG and GIF images both show up fine. Any ideas how to fix this, or what might be causing it to not display PNG images?
It did for me when I tried it.

Is the .png file embedded in the mail or is it attached to an email?
In both the scenarios you should be able to view it.
Start Outlook in safe mode and verify whether issue re-occurs.
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run > type ‘Outlook /safe’ without quotes > OK
Note: There is a space between Outlook and ‘/’
If the above steps fails, create new profile and see if it helps.

The .png was embedded in the mail. For example, one was a company logo. Another used several .pngs for background images. Outlook is displaying red X's, as if they're broken links.

When I click 'view in browser', Internet Explorer also shows a red X. However, when I hit F5 to refresh IE, the .png image appears.

Running Outlook in safe mode made no difference. I also have several different profiles, and the same issue occurs with each of them.

My guess is a file for Outlook may be corrupted somewhere. When Outlook was initially installed, I'm pretty sure it showed .png images.

I don't think it's a corruption, particularly because IE itself would not show it until you forced IE to refresh.  More likely it's a network zone setting.

I've replied to this on a seperate thread, and you actually seem to be having exactly the same issue we're having, so hopefully the below will help you fix it, albeit without actually getting the root of the issue:


We have a very similar issue with one of our corporate emails.  Images are stored on various servers and all but the .png files load correctly.  The .png files show a red cross with the error "The image cannot be shown...".

I tried various changes to security settings until all security was effectively switched off and the issue was the same.

I managed to 'fix' the problem by clearing the outlook secure temp files cache and reopening the mail (outlook must be closed when you do this) - all the images started displaying correctly.  It's almost like the cache had cached the error message with a blank image, and then because as far as Outlook was concerned there was a cached version it wasn't trying to pull them down again even though they were available on the server.

The default location on Windows 7\Office 2010 for the Outlook cache should be: C:\Users\*Username*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files which you will only be able to see if you have the "show hidden files and folders" and have unchecked the "Hide Protected Operating System Files" option.  You can check where the cache is by looking at the registry key HKCU\\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\Security\OutlookSecureTempFolder which shows the full path.

Once I've cleared on the cache the problem doesn't seem to return either, it's all very odd.

The proper emptying of the Outlook Secure Temp folder has been an issue for a long time and I've seen patches that try to addrss it.  A couple of things that can help are 1) moving the Secure Temp folder to a folder that's easier to see by changing the value of the registry key, whch will allow you to clear it more easily if it doesn't clear on its own and 2) always closing attachments before closing the message to which they are attached so that when the message closes, Outlook can clear any temporary files associates with the open message.

So do you know if this issue is being investigated by Microsoft, with a view to providing a definitive fix via a patch or SP?

Whilst I understand your comments around moving the folder to an easier to find location to enable the manual clearing down, and in a single user environment something that I'd also say is a good idea in the interim, this obviously isn't an enterprise solution and not something that I can advise our very our large userbase to start doing.  This is further exasperated by the fact this issue has only seemingly been introduced in Office 2010/Windows 7 (I'm assuming it's a Office 2010 issue, but we started upgrades to both in parallel), so is causing problems with trying to get people to migrate onto the newer and 'better' platforms.

Microsoft has issued multiple fixes for the issue, but the fact that it still happens indicates to me that there are multiple causes and that while Microsoft may have fixed some of the situations where emptying doesn't occur, there must be other situations that they haven't been able to address yet.  I'm sure they're aware of the ongoing nature os the problem.

You could always update the registry entry via push to all of the desktop systems so the individual users don't need to do it themselves.

It still occurs in Outlook 365 - exactly the same problem that you have described.  I have been chasing around various forums for several months now trying to find a solution (none has worked).  Isn't it about time Microsoft stepped up and provided a definitive fix?

Meanwhile, I have an OutlookSecureTemp file which ostensibly has nothing in it, but still no nearer to displaying .png files embedded in emails.  Is there a trick to clearing this file?
